Causes Europeans’ motives for exploration are considered part of the causes of exploration New technology was part of the causes of exploration Europeans’ understanding of geography is also a cause

Motives Historians sum up the key motives as: “Gold, Glory & God” Europeans had been interested in Asia since Marco Polo The Ottoman Turks blocked easy (and cheap) access to Asian goods – like spices Europeans wanted to find a direct route to Asia

Exploration Begins! Prince Henry the Navigator & Portugal School for Navigators Portuguese explorers take routes around Africa When they reach India & Spice Islands – the race is on!

Effects The effects of early exploration are more complex than the causes…. How other European countries respond is an effect… How the people Europeans encounter respond is an effect… We’ll look at short-term effects now, and study long-term effects over the course of the chapter

The Effects Continue… In Asia, both the Mogul Empire and the Ming Dynasty are willing to let Europeans trade. In the Americas, natives are starting to become ill, and disease spreads silently… Spain & Portugal launch more explorers… The Dutch decide to launch their own voyages both west and east.
