Background Clemson Connect (previously LIB100) is a zero-credit course Required for all incoming freshmen and transfer students Library segment was one of 4 total, all required
6
Previous Approach Face-to-face workshops provided in first couple of years More than 200 workshops in the fall semesters Transitioned after decision to increase upperclassmen/ faculty focus
7
First Attempt Created 5 tutorials from workshop main concepts: What Does the Library Have for You? – 0:51 Starting Your Research – 2:20 Evaluating & Citing Your Sources – 2:02 How to Find a Book – 1:54 How to Find an Article – 2:21
9
Feedback Survey sent in spring 2013 to evaluate tutorials from fall 2012 10% response rate – approx. 500 of 4,400 former students responded Chance to win iTunes gift card
10
Rate the following aspects of the videos…
11
Rate the videos’ relevance to your library and information needs…
12
What do you remember about the library tutorial videos you watched as part of LIB100?
13
Almost 17% responded “very little” or “nothing” or mentioned something that was not part of the library segment. “It would be more helpful to be able to have the information (videos) online where you can watch when you need them, not watch them when you don't need them and forget. We have so much to do, let us do it when we need it or make it fun.”
14

Where we were: Face-to-face drop-in workshops Relatively successful in fall 2012 Scheduled as 50 minutes long Variety of dates and times based on class schedules Evaluation feedback request Distance students Convenience Grad Student Boot Camp Why we moved some sessions online
21
What was different about online sessions? Shorter Find It Fast sessions were 15 minutes, others were 20-30 minutes Activities required more feedback from students Needed to explain classroom setting More team teaching Transition to online Started small, just a few librarians Planned specialized workshops Offered “Find It Fast” sessions
22
Online Classroom Tour – Adobe Connect http://connect.clemson.edu/culibrary
23
Recording Getting feedback Following up Online Classroom Considerations
24
Online Classroom Techniques “Arrange the chairs” Consider your content Prep your browser Narrate the pauses Trust the technology
25
Results Attendance was limited – similar to face-to-face sessions Attendees were engaged Decided to limit future online and face-to-face workshops
26
Conclusions Videos can serve as effective library introductions Recorded tutorials require care & feeding Live, online instruction cannot just be live instruction online Options available for all budgets
