1 ABCD as a digital library tool An introduction on the concept and implementation by Egbert de Smet Univ. of Antwerp
2
2 Overview Introduction of ABCD software for library automation Requirements for digital libraries Current capabilities of ABCD for digital libraries Extending digital library features in the future ABCD
3
3 Introduction on ABCD as a library automation software Automation of liBraries and Centres for Documentation Not just library automation, higher level of flexibility and diversity of use Aiming at current and new ISIS-users FOSS-project by the Flemish Interuniversity Council (VLIR) with BIREME (WHO/Brazil) First release 1.0 December 2009, now at release 1.2
4
4 Current reality of ABCD ABCD has reached operational usability status while still being further developed as a FOSS with tickets-system and discussion list. The ISIS-community has embraced ABCD as the new main representative, follower-up to WinISIS Mostly in Latin-America but also in (East-) Africa university libraries have started using ABCD ABCD can be compared to KOHA
5
5 Special features of ABCD The Central module allows to create (or copy) database-structures, allowing use of any bibliographic or meta-data structure ABCD fully has adopted all WinISIS features in this respect : FDT, FST, PFT's Full-text indexing has been a feature of ISIS from its early days Fully web-based with PHP, AJAX.. allowing advanced multi-media and linking features e.g. HTML editor
6
6 Some Digital Library technical characteristics Multitude of document formats : PDF, DOC, ODF, XML, HTML, JPG, etc. etc. Multitude of meta-data sets : digital collections appear in all kinds of formats and are generated often on very local ('cultural heritage') structures Full-text retrieval : searching the libraries is done full-text on top of the meta-data fields OAI : world-wide web-based free availability
7
7 ABCD : freedom of database structure The ABCD Central module allows to create (or copy) any database structure with its own fields, formatting and indexing definitions
8
8 ABCD : full-text fields ABCD-data entry forms allow entry of full (html-) documents into a record's field
9
9 ABCD's OAI interface ABCD has an OAI server which allows retrieval of ABCD-records from ABCD-databases Direct URL-based retrieval is also possible
10
Installation issues ABCD diglib package contains : additional icon, messages-tables, demo-database Requires : a new way (ABCD v2.0) to dynamically define which cgi-bin folder to use in order to allow different versions of CISIS exe’s E.g. CISIS UNICODE (almost ready) CISIS big-records (up to 1Mb) => for Digital Library In cgi-bin : pdftohtml.exe and tika.jar (with java) For each DL database : document folder in htdocs/bases
11
11 Illustrations Theses database : for use as an institutional repository Websites database : a portal to relevant websites for your institute Scientific Abstracts (TEEAL) : web-based access to subscribed content Create your own collection with PDF's :

ABCD Digital Library illustrations ABCD Central ABCD iAH
13
ABCD Digital Library illustrations Librarians can manage the Digital Library collection in ABCD Central Users can search the collection from the OPAC Limitations : Incremental indexing only with ‘classic ISIS’ (32Kb) Up to 1Mb records with extended version, but no incremental indexing
14
14 Integrated meta-search for all collections One search environment can send search to all defined databases in ABCD, including the catalog and the digital collections The result will be shown separately by source (meta-search)
15
15 Future developments of ABCD as a digital library tool New ISIS-technology is being developed by UNESCO (J- ISIS) and BIREME (SciELO) A new database storage engine : Berkely DB, as being developed in the new J-ISIS No more record- and database-size limits Fully UNICODE (see J-ISIS presentation) LUCENE indexing for full-text retrieval, ranking and clustering of search results ABCD version 2.0 ? 2012 ???
16
16 ABCD's digital library concept A digital library is not just a digitized collection put online A digital library is an integrated service (a 'one- stop' place to go) of many different digital collections of documents with catalog searching possibilities and full-document consultation …. exactly like a traditional library is an integrated service of many different printed collections
