4 Starter Watch the following clips: Jay’s story Ruth’s story Discuss: What are the benefits of carrying out Psychological research into Gender Dysphoria for people such as Jay and Ruth? Extension: What could be the negative implications of carrying out research into Gender Dysphoria?

5 Terminology  The term Gender Identity Disorder was used on DSM IV.  The term Gender Dysphoria is now used on DSM V.  Therefore the literature will refer to both of these terms. Discuss: Why might the DSM have decided to change the terminology?

6 Clinical diagnosis The DSM V states the following: The critical element of gender dysphoria is the presence of clinically significant distress associated with the condition. For a person to be diagnosed with gender dysphoria, there must be a marked difference between the individual’s expressed/experienced gender and the gender others would assign him or her, and it must continue for at least six months. Put this in your notes

7 Clinical diagnosis The DSM V states the following: In children, the desire to be of the other gender must be present and verbalized. This condition causes clinically significant distress or impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning. Gender dysphoria is manifested in a variety of ways, including strong desires to be treated as the other gender or to be rid of one’s sex characteristics, or a strong conviction that one has feelings and reactions typical of the other gender.

9 Your task Read through the hand out on the bio social approach to explaining Gender Dysphoria. Summarise this information into no more than one side of A4. Extension: Plan the following potential question: Discuss the biosocial approach to Gender Dysphoria. (8+16 marks)

10 Check your understanding Read through the BBC News article (October, 2009). Write a response to this article, using your Psychological knowledge to argue for or against whether 12 year olds should be able to receive hypothalamic blockers for Gender Dysphoria. Extension: How could you test whether this is an appropriate intervention?
