1 Laboratory Visitor Orientation

2 Definition of Visitor A visitor is a person touring the laboratory or observing activities for a short period of time and who will not be undertaking any research or other work activities on behalf of the university. This can include visiting researchers, VIPs, media representatives or student groups.

3 Training Visitors need to be oriented to understand the safety risks associated with laboratory work, personal protective equipment required, rules required when in a lab as well as emergency procedures. If the visitor will be performing research activities, they should take course BLS025w: ONLINE REQUIRED General Laboratory Safety Training available at www. oseh.umich.edu.BLS025w: ONLINE REQUIRED General Laboratory Safety Training

4 Visitor Expectations Visitors should be escorted within the laboratory by someone knowledgeable about the lab activities.

5 Lab Environment Laboratories contain many hazards in many different forms from chemical, biological, physical, etc. This training is for observation visits only and the visitor should take care not to disturb any processes/equipment in the laboratory.

6 Lab Environment No food/drink is allowed within the laboratory. Tie back long hair and avoid wearing loose jewelry. Always wash your hands when leaving the lab.

7 Personal Protective Equipment Visitors should wear long pants and closed-toe footwear. Visitors should wear, at a minimum, safety glasses at all times within the laboratory. Gloves and lab coats are typically required when actively handling chemicals, but additional items may be required as deemed necessary by the lab when observing activities.

9 Emergency Procedures Know the Emergency Evacuation Route and meeting locations for the lab. Know where the fire extinguishers are located and the location of the nearest pull station. Know the Location of first aid kit Know the location and proper use of safety showers. Know the location and proper use of eyewash stations.

10 Use of an Emergency Eyewash Station or Safety Shower 1.Without delay, make your way to the nearest eyewash or shower station, activate and flush eyes and/or skin for a minimum of 15 minutes. 2.When using an eyewash station, keep the eyes open and rotate the eyeballs in all directions to remove contamination from around the eyes. An injured person may need help holding the eyelids open. 3.When using a safety shower, remove any clothing, shoes, and jewelry that may impede completely flushing body surfaces. 4.Notify your U-M contact for further information.

12 Emergency Procedures If a visitor is injured, call 911 or seek treatment at the emergency room at UMHS.
