First done by Charles Lynch. The illegal act of hanging people. Usually done by mobs.

Originally a way to punish African American slaves. More black people got lynched then white. The people who committed the crime of lynching were usually white.

1880-1930 The estimated lynching's in this time period was 4,743. Of these 3,446 were black and 1,297 were white.

To punish those who committed crimes against white community. Maintain power over African Americans. Eliminate black social, political and economic threats. Enforced white supremacy.

This happened in all 50 states. Lynching of black people happened more in the South. Lynching of white people happened less often, but did take place more in the Northern states.
