Cause of Attachment? 1.Freud said it was feeding. 2.Harry Harlow said it was touch (“contact comfort”) 3.So who is right?
13
Harry Harlow’s Experiment [1 of 2] 1.He put monkey in cage for one year with wire covered doll mother with bottle AND soft terry cloth covered doll mother 2.Observed with which mother the monkey spends most time. 3.You should look at pictures and “guestimate” which mother was preferred. 4.Whose theory of cause of attachment appears to have stronger support – Freud’s or Harlow’s?

Assessing Attachment between Caregiver and Child Is measured using Mary Ainworth’s Method -- called “The Strange Situation” Three Behaviors are closely observed when child is placed in an unfamiliar room with its caregiver. Three signs of attachment are: 1.If child uses caregiver as “safe base” for exploring a strange room 2.If child is distressed when caregiver leaves the room 3.If child is comforted or joyful when caregiver returns to room [LAST ITEM is strongest predictor of “Secure Attachment”!] This “Strange Situation” Video demonstrates presence of behaviors 2 and 3 above. Click here VideoVideo
16
Patterns of Attachment Secure Attachment [most desirable] 60%; explore the strange room; cry when left by caregiver; comforted on caregiver’s return [“The Reunion”] Insecure Attachment [Less desirable] – Avoidant Attachment – 15%; don’t explore room, avoid or ignore caregiver – Ambivalent Attachment – 10% Wary, clinging; distress when left by caregiver, mixed response upon return – Disorganized (Anxious) – 15%; No consistent method of coping with stressors

If you are not sure, go back two slides to find the answer. Video one click for video of Lion and ManVideo one Video two click for video of Lion and WomanVideo two
