3 Smoke alarms save lives, fact. Do you have a smoke/heat alarm in the house you live in? Do you regularly test and clean your alarm/s? Do you expect there to be a fire alarm system in this building? If the alarm sounds here what would you do? Do the properties you enter have fully functioning fire alarms?

5 Accidental dwelling fires SFRS P&P priorities: Reduce accidental fires, fire casualties and fire loss in the home SFRS attended 5,571 dwelling fires in 2014-15, 31 preventable fire deaths 2014/15 Over 5 year period 60% male fatalities 2014-15 85% fatalities 60+ Smoking materials responsible as cause of 52% preventable fatalities Living room most common room of origin. 7 Accidental dwelling fire casualties 1,098 casualties within dwelling fires 2014/15 Over 600 casualties in kitchen More fires start in the kitchen than any other room Cooking is the biggest cause of house fires in Scotland Some of the most common fires in the home are electrically related.

9 Who is at risk from fire? Everyone? Older people People with physical and mental health issues including dementia or cognitive impairment People with a visual and/or a hearing impairment People dependent on drugs and/or alcohol People who smoke People who live in our most deprived communities People who live alone or live in an isolated or rural community People who hoard or live in heavily cluttered households Scotland Together Report 2009

10 Conseqences Cost of a dwelling fire is stated to be £29,100* Fire fatality costs £1.35 million Serious injury £155,000 UK annually £2.5 billion Scotland £85 million Smoke alarms cost: Smoke alarm = £10 Heat alarm = £20 Therefore 3 smoke and 1 heat = £50

11 Events prior to Fire & Rescue attendance. Typical small flatted property within residential area. Single elderly /disabled occupant. Heavy smoker with above average alcohol consumption. Provided with significant supported care due to levels of disablement. Evidence of poor fire safety. No prior referral to Fire Service.

12 What is the Issue?

13 Sequence of Events Elderly woman pushing walking aid while balancing a small tray with lit cigarettes and ashtray. The reduced mobility and motor skills of the householder caused the tray to be dislodged from the walking aid. Setting fire to house coat, rubber grips on the walker and the living room carpet. Elderly fire victim loses her balance and falls, smashing glass insert in coffee table

16 Community Care & Support in Place Significant levels of home support from primary and secondary providers. Installed community alarm. No link to smoke detectors. WOULD YOU HAVE MADE A REFERRAL TO THE FIRE AND RESCUE SERVICE ?
