1 CFI 2013-2015 NPT Forestry & Fire Management Division

2 CFI 2013-2015 NPT Forestry & Fire Management Division Continuous Forest Inventory (CFI) The primary purpose of this project is to re-measure, or establish as necessary, a permanent plot system to assess: timber stocking trends; current and potential forest growth and yield rates; measure forest characteristics compared to desired objectives (e.g., mortality rates and causes, stand density, and species composition); on NPT commercial forest land holdings.

3 CFI 2013-2015 NPT Forestry & Fire Management Division CFI History Plots initially gridded to 1 plot per 80 acres in 1974. Inv. 33 CFI 2013-2015 NPT Forestry & Fire Management Division Annual Allowable Cut – Management towards a Fully Regulated Forest 1.Austrian formula (Volume Control)  “The principle of gradually building up or reducing the average growing stock by cutting less or more than the current growth over some adjustment period.”  Applied more readily to uneven-aged stands.  Not related directly to area which doesn’t provide clear direction towards a desired degree of age- and size-class regularity. 2.Area-Volume Check Method (Area Control)  Simple and direct  Identifies volume to be cut with areas on the ground  Complete forest regularity after one rotation  More suited to even-aged stands  Must be combined with Volume Control for uneven-aged stands

34 CFI 2013-2015 NPT Forestry & Fire Management Division Annual Allowable Cut – 28” Max DBH (5 BA Old Growth)
