? properties of matter/substance independent of how much of the material is present.
2
Intrinsic Properties: properties of matter/substance Amount of substance does not affect these properties
3
Intrinsic Properties Examples: Non Examples:
4
Intrinsic Properties: Examples: density, color, reactivity, solubility, flammability, melting/boiling point, conductivity Non example: mass, volume
5
Mass and Volume are examples of: Properties
6
Mass and Volume are examples of: Extrinsic Properties-changes depending on the amount of the material present.
7
? Anything that has mass and takes up space, made of atoms
8
Matter Anything that has mass and takes up space, made of atoms
9
? Matter Cannot be created or destroyed
10
Law of Conservation of Mass Matter Cannot be created or destroyed
11
What are the three states of matter
12
Solid, liquid, gas

21
? Pure substance made of two or more different elements joined by chemical bonds. Can only be separated by chemical means, not physically
22
Compound Pure substance made of two or more different elements joined by chemical bonds. Can only be separated by chemical means, not physically

? As thermal energy decreases, what happens to the movement of molecules?
28
Slow down/closer together As thermal energy decreases, what happens to the movement of molecules?
29
? Which has a higher density: Copper at 28°C or Copper at 34°C? Why?
30
Copper at 28 degrees Which has a higher density: Copper at 28°C or Copper at 34°C? Why? Because it has less thermal energy, so less movement, so the atoms are closer together
31
Separating Mixtures You are given a bucket filled with sand, rocks, iron nails, and pieces of foam. Discuss with your partner how you would separate the pieces from each other and what equipment you would need. No, you cannot simply pick the things out with your hands Once you have a plan, share it with your table group to compare and decide on a final plan.
32
Separating Mixtures Just one way of doing it: 1. Use a magnet to separate the iron nails. 2. Use a grate/strainer to separate the rocks out. 3. Use water to make the foam float to the top and skim it off. 4. Boil off the water from the sand. These are all PHYSICAL methods.

Describe the properties of each state of matter. (Attraction, Movement, Shape, Volume, and Mass) SolidLiquid Gas
47
(Attraction, Movement, Shape, Volume, and Mass) SolidLiquid Has a definite shape and volume Molecules are packed tightly together Molecules only vibrate slightly Molecules are VERY attracted to each other Has a definite volume but no definite shape (Takes the shape of its container) Molecules are packed almost as tightly as a solid Molecules move freely around each other Molecules are somewhat attracted to each other. Gas No definite shape or volume As gas molecules spread apart, they fill all the available space. (takes on shape of container) Molecules move at high speeds in all directions Molecules not attracted to each other.
