NEPAL EARTHQUAKE A CALL TO PRAYER
2
NEPAL EARTHQUAKE On Saturday 25 April, a magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck Nepal. This is the worst earthquake to hit the area in 81 years.
3
MILLIONS AFFECTED So far the UN estimates that more than 5,000 people have died and thousands more have been injured. Around 8 million have been affected, with 1.4 million requiring urgent food aid.
4
SA RESPONSE The Salvation Army has been at work in Nepal since 2009, but our presence is very small. A team of SA emergency workers have travelled to Kathmandu to undertake assessments and work with other NGO’s to respond.
5
SA RESPONSE An initial sum of $20,000 has already been released by International Headquarters to provide 40 tents and a large supply of essentials such as food, water and blankets. The India Eastern Territory, which oversees Salvation Army work in Nepal, is sourcing food, water and other essentials, which it hopes to transport by road – although the damage caused by the earthquake to major routes is making this very difficult.
6
PRAY FOR THOSE AFFECTED… For comfort for those who are mourning. That the necessary supplies will reach everyone who needs them. Give thanks for those that are still being rescued from the rubble. Pray for their full recovery to health.
7
PRAY FOR THE TEAM… For Majors Lalsangliana Vuite and Lalnunsangi Ralte who lead the ministry in Nepal. For the international Salvation Army emergency workers who have travelled to Nepal to assist: o Damaris Frick (International Headquarters) o Colonel Carol Telfer (Pakistan) o Major MacDonald Chandi (Pakistan) o Captain Kathy Crombie (International Social Justice Commission, New York)
8
PRAY FOR THE RESPONSE WORKERS… For all of the emergency response workers, that they will have the wisdom, skill and sensitivity to best allocate resources.
9
PRAY FOR THE CAFÉ STAFF… For the social enterprise café & beauty salon that the SA recently opened to provide training for trafficked & vulnerable women. That the café can repair the damage sustained quickly. For the staff and apprentices who depend on this.
