LEWIS AND CLARK’S JOURNEY CORPS OF DISCOVERY New Nation

Starting the Journey Lewis met up with Clark in Clarksville, IN. The rounded up a couple of other men, and then headed to St. Louis to start their trip. Left with 42 men, 1 slave named York, and a dog.

Daily Life Didn’t get in too big of a hurry. Took plenty of time to stop and explore the land around them. Men hunted every single day, and looked for new plants and animals. Seven members of the crew kept journals.

Dealings with Indians Very friendly towards Indians. Took beads, flags, and medals to show that they were friendly and open to trade. Some natives weren’t happy with small medals and US flags. Threatened to kill L&C for giving them junk. Lewis killed 2 Indians on the way home when they tried to steal from him.

Fort Mandan It gets cold in North Dakota. October 1804, the Corps decided to set up a camp for the winter at Fort Mandan, ND. Meet a French fur trader and his wife Sacagawea. Lewis thinks they could be helpful, so he hires them to come on the trip with them.

Leaving North Dakota Sacagawea gives birth to a son and then goes on with Lewis and Clark 3 months later. Lewis sends 12 guys back to St. Louis with all of their scientific discoveries up to that point. Lewis and Clark head west with the rest of the crew, killing as many buffalo as possible along the way.

Montana They kept following the river until they hit the Great Falls of the Missouri River. Had to carry their boats around 5 waterfalls. As they get deeper into the mountains, they run into Sacagawea’s home tribe, the Shoshone.

Bitterroot Mountains They had never seen mountains as big as these. “I have been wet and cold in every part as I Have ever been in my life.” Clark Food was hard to come by, and it snowed every day.

Continental Divide Top of the Mountain Range All rivers on one side flow in one direction, while all rivers on the other side flow in the opposite direction. When Lewis and Clark came down from the Bitterroots, they found the rivers carrying them out to the Pacific.

Ocian in view, O’ the joy They built Fort Clatsop on the Pacific coast near Cape Disappointment After a year and a half, they had finally reached the end.

Trip Home Not nearly as eventful. Took less time because they had learned about shortcuts from natives, and they went with the river for most of the trip. Split up for part of the time. Nobody had expected them to survive, and they were all shocked when they returned.
