Reasons for U.S. Imperialism

Review and Preview Thinking back to your 8 th grade year, consider what motivations the United States had for expanding across the United States? If you can, think of a few specific examples. Then answer this question: Why do you think the United States may have wanted to pursue a policy of Imperialism? Why did the U.S imperialize? M 2 C 2

Reason # 1 – (New) Markets Surplus of goods creating need for new markets throughout the world Acquire natural resources New investment Need to fuel a growing industrial economy

Reason # 2 – Military Strength (Naval Bases) Alfred T. Mahan – encourage U.S. to build its naval power (compete with world powers) ◦Great Britain, France, Germany, Russia Need for naval bases for fuel stations throughout the world ◦Throughout the Pacific

Reason # 3 – (Global) Competition Competition with European countries Africa and Asia seen as main targets ◦Only two African countries remain independent Theodore Roosevelt’s desire to be a world power This is what world powers do “As one of the great nations of the world, the United States must not fall out of the line of march.” ~ U.S. Senator What does this mean??? What nations do you think were the major world power around the year 1900? Think about to 7 th grade, what nations became world empires?

Look at Great Britain (light purple), why do you think it was said that the “sun never set on the British Empire.”

Reason # 4 - Cultural Superiority Social Darwinism & racial superiority America’s duty to “Christianize and Civilize” Idea that God had willed the United States to be greater than all other nations (Manifest Destiny) Rudyard Kipling’s, “White Man’s Burden” Josiah Strong’s, “Our Country”

Take up the White Man's burden-- Send forth the best ye breed-- Go bind your sons to exile To serve your captives' need; To wait in heavy harness, On fluttered folk and wild-- Your new-caught, sullen peoples, Half-devil and half-child. What is a burden? Kipling is British. What does he mean by “best ye breed?” To serve your captives’ need means what? Why call the natives “half-devil” and “half child”?

View both cartoons from two distinct views: whose “burden” do you think it is?

“It seems to me that God, with infinite wisdom and skill, is training the Anglo-Saxon race for an hour sure to come in the world's future.” ~ Josiah Strong from “Our Country” What 8 th grade term does this sound a lot like?

Reviewing - Main Idea: In the 1800s, the United States began to look beyond its borders for territory and influence. At the same time, it began to debate the value of overseas expansion. Complete the graphic organizer
