Structure Being organised Clear instructions to follow Written information Checking their work Reading & writing Working to deadlines Working in a linear way – first point, then second point etc. Revision Technique – Left brain? Right brain? LEFT BRAINED PEOPLE PREFER:

Revision Technique – Left brain? Right brain? RIGHT BRAINED PEOPLE PREFER: Working from intuition & guesswork Setting their own deadlines Looking at the “big picture” - the whole task Learning from a video, role play or watching a demonstration Self-selected tasks Hands-on experience Open-ended tasks RIGHT BRAINED PEOPLE MAY APPEAR DISORGANISED

Most people use both sides of their brain, but the balance may differ between individuals. Revision Technique – Left brain? Right brain? Most people have a preference for one hemisphere, however. You can now use your understanding of your own mind to create a learning profile of yourself... …..it will help you work out the best way to tackle your studying

Revision Technique – Left brain? Right brain? If you’re mostly left brained : You need: Structure… Because: Clear instructions…... Written information... Working in a linear manner... …..………....you like order and can’t work efficiently in chaos. …...you like direction....you like to re-read information to clarify and check your work. …...you like to go through tasks step by step.

Revision Technique – Left brain? Right brain? If you’re mostly right brained : You need: Open-ended tasks… Because: The big picture…. Self-selecting tasks.. To work from intuition... …you make connections to prior learning. …it allows you to get an overview of the whole process. …it allows you to choose between group work or working alone. …it allows you to learn by discovery.

Revision Technique – Left brain? Right brain? you tend to analyse things, working out possible consequences before embarking on a task. If you’re mostly left brained : you don’t like working in a chaotic environment. you will have good notes, in order and possibly even colour-coded.

Revision Technique – What can I do to help me remember? Break work down into small sections – they’re easier to handle It’s no co-incidence that the BBC revision website is called “Bitesize” ! Highlight keywords in your notes so they are easier to spot ! Highlight Colour code your notes to highlight different themes ! Colour code

Revision Technique – What can I do to help me remember? Be Imaginative Record yourself reading your notes out loud Play it back whilst relaxing or doing other things Get together on MSN with 3 or 4 friends One asks questions on a topic – the others see who can answer first Get together with 3 or 4 friends Each create a PowerPoint on a different topic Swap Power Points

Revision Technique – Left brain? Right brain? you tend to live for the moment and not think too much about consequences. If you’re mostly right brained : you like to be creative and imaginative when tackling tasks. you have good ideas about tackling tasks – but aren’t necessarily good at completing that task. you don’t like deadlines and they may cause you stress. you should incorporate videos, graphs, mind-maps, computers and colour into your studying.

Link new information to things you already remember. Build on what you already know. Making your own concept maps is always a handy way of visualising how ideas and events interconnect Revision Technique – Make the connection :

Revision Technique – Left brain? Right brain? Left brained or Right brained?

Write your notes in short blocks and organise them afterwards. See if you can find useful ways of linking information together, or of finding new categories to arrange them in. Add pictures to make facts memorable Revision Technique – Get Organised

Revision Technique – What can I do to help me remember? Use mnemonics- Mnemonic: n. A device, such as a formula or rhyme, used as an aid in remembering. 30 days has September, April, June and November…

Revision Technique – What can I do to help me remember? Use mnemonics-Silly Sentences – make up your own! Mercury Venus Earth Mars Jupiter Saturn Uranus Neptune Pluto My Very Efficient Memory Just Stores Up Nine Planets - great for remembering lists: - or for remembering spellings - the sillier the better ! Oesophagus One Enormous Smelly Old Pig Had A Giant Unbelievable Snout !

Rehearse, rehearse : Rehearse, rehearse Try to recall new information frequently the same day you receive it, and then for a few days afterwards. Many people believe this approach is far more effective than cramming.

Revision Technique – What can I do to help me remember? Use mnemonics-Rhyming Associations ! 1 gun Visualise the first item being fired from a gun 2 shoe Visualise the second thing and shoes 3 tree Visualise the third item growing from a tree 4 door Visualise the 4th item with a door 5 hive Visualise the fifth item with a hive or with bees 6 bricks Visualise the sixth item with bricks 7 heaven Visualise the seventh item with heaven 8 plate Visualise the 8th item on a plate as if it is food 9 line Visualise yourself fishing with the 9th item on your line 10 hen Visualise the 10th item with a chicken. - the sillier the better ! For example to remember the following grocery list of 10 items: Milk: Picture a stream of milk being fired from a gun Eggs: Picture an egg wearing shoes Butter: Picture sticks of butter growing from a tree Bread: Picture a door made from bread Jam : Picture bees flying from a jam jar Beer: Picture a brick house with cans where the bricks should be Toilet paper: Imagine A roll of TP with angel wings and a halo Soap: Picture a bar of soap on a plate- yum Razor blades: Picture yourself reeling in a razor blade as if it's a fish Batteries: Picture a mechanical hen that runs on batteries If this sounds obscure, close your eyes and try to remember the grocery list you just read. You may be surprised.

Revision Technique – What can I do to help me remember? Be Imaginative Build a REVISION WALL !

Try to associate information with textures, objects, tastes and smells. Try repeating key ideas out loud in a rhythmic pattern. Write down information from memory as often as you can – doing this helps embed it in your memory. Revision Technique –Use your senses : ?

Don’t keep reminding yourself how bad your memory is. Stay motivated and believe you can learn and remember all that you need. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d6wRkz CW5qI http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d6wRkz CW5qI Believe it!!!
