 A two-step equation is an equation in which two operations must be performed in order to solve it.

 You are the host - a.k.a ‘X’  In what order do people leave a party? - Enemies (get rid of them to avoid trouble) - Acquaintances (after mingling with everyone, they usually leave early) - Friends (they hang out with the host a little longer) - Family (if attending, they will stay to the end to help clean)

 2x = 8 Family …right beside you and  (x/3) = 18 only you…until the end!  X + 3 = 15 Friends …they are close to  X – 5 = 20 you…they stay longer than some people, not as long as family

 In the example (x – 5)/3 = 7, 3 is the acquaintance  Acquaintances mingle with many parts of the equation instead of giving most of its attention to the host (x)

(x – 5) = 7 3 The equal sign is the door…Who goes out first?

 2y – 8 = 20 2y – 8 + 8 = 20 + 8 Add or Subtract first 2y = 28 2y/2 = 28/2 Multiply or Divide second y = 14 Check by Substitution

 10 = (m/4) + 2 10 – 2 = (m/4) + 2 – 2 Add or Subtract first 8 = (m/4) 4 * 8 = 4 * (m/4) Multiply or Divide Second 32 = m Check by Substitution

 Work with your assigned partner to complete your worksheet

 On a Post-It, evaluate at least one of the following: 1. -24 = 7x + 18 2. -8(3 – s) = 32 3. (b + 4)/7 = -3
