5.  In the example (x – 5)/3 = 7, 3 is the acquaintance  Acquaintances mingle with many parts of the equation instead of giving most of its attention to the host (x)

7.  2y – 8 = 20 2y – 8 + 8 = 20 + 8 Add or Subtract first 2y = 28 2y/2 = 28/2 Multiply or Divide second y = 14 Check by Substitution

8.  10 = (m/4) + 2 10 – 2 = (m/4) + 2 – 2 Add or Subtract first 8 = (m/4) 4 * 8 = 4 * (m/4) Multiply or Divide Second 32 = m Check by Substitution
