2014 GMNA Hearing Conservation and Noise Control Program Report Summary Presentation Eltaneice Bolden GM Global Industrial Hygiene Manager

Report Contents  Summary of Results  Sound Exposure Data  Occupational Hearing Loss Cases  Hearing Conservation Program –Audiometric testing –Prevalence of recordable hearing loss –Training  Noise Control Engineering  Top 5 Overall Noise Issues  Action Plan

Summary  Noise exposure levels over 85 decibels (TWA) increased by 2% from the previous year due largely to reductions in headcount combined with an increase in the number of employees included in the HCP.  A notable increase in the number of recordable hearing loss cases in 2014 compared to the previous year.  Audiometric testing and training exceeded 100% in all functional groups.  Engineering expenditures for noise control in 2014 increased when compared to 2013.

Hearing Conservation Program Composition 6,040 employees 9.4% of the total workforce An Increase of 1.6% from 2013 Hearing Conservation Program Composition 6,040 employees 9.4% of the total workforce An Increase of 1.6% from 2013 Exposure Greater than 90 dBA TWA 907 employees (1.4% of the workforce) Reduction of 20 employees from 2013 Exposure 85 - 90 dBA TWA 5,133 employees (8.0% of the workforce) reduction of 139 employees from 2013 Sound Exposures

Sound Exposures by Manufacturing Group

Hearing Loss Cases Year over Year STS+ have increased significantly (by 52%) as the number of workers receiving audiograms has increased as well.

2014 – Recordable Injuries  GMNA experienced 164 recordable hearing loss cases (STS+)  The Five top Contributing Sites Flint Metal Center recorded 54, or 33% Defiance recorded 27, or 16.5% Marion recorded 17, or 10.4% Wentzville recorded 7, or 4.3% Bedford reported 5, or 3%  In addition there were 137 STS cases reported in GMNA

Percentage of Exposed Workers with Recordable Hearing Loss

Audiometric Tests Expressed as a Percent of Exposed Workers

Note: Well over 100% of employees were trained on the HCP HCP Training Expressed as a Percent of Exposed Workers

Noise Control Expenditures OSHA requires engineering control of noise sources that cause exposures > 90 dBA.  Estimated 2,016 hours devoted to noise control in 2014  Estimated $1.23 Million Total noise control engineering expenditures in 2014

Engineering Expenditures

2014 Top 5 Self Identified Noise Issues  (CET) Compressed Air Blow off  (CET & VA) Fork truck entering Trailers  (VA) Weld Destruct Booth  (CS) Stamp Press Noise  (CS) Scrap Conveyors

Action Plan 1.Continue to increase the focus on “buy quiet” and engineering controls to reduce exposure to noise levels to 80 dBA. 2.Continue to ensure that 100% of the number of employees in the HCP have audiograms and receive adequate HCP training. 3.Increase focus on proper use of hearing protection devices at the floor level through safety talks and safety observation tours.

Action Plan 4.Enhance communication and involvement on Noise buy-off requirements in Change Management Process across all mfg. functions. 5.Site NCHP Committees should focus on eliminating their top 3 affected noise problems as reported in the SSR. 6.Leverage the UAW-GM Safety System and S&IH Management System standards and GAP Analysis tools to ensure that all elements of the Hearing Conservation Program are completely implemented.
