EDGE™ Phase 0: Planning Mission Statement Product Description The ARC of Monroe County has requested a communication board for one of its consumers who has limited verbal and spelling capabilities. This is a revision of a project completed during the 2006/2007 academic year that demonstrated the fundamental operation of a battery powered, touch screen, and LCD display based device. Based on feedback from the customer, the prototype needs to be refined to more closely meet the actual customer requirements in terms of size, weight, durability, and operational characteristics. Key Business Goals The primary business goals of this product are to Improve the quality of life for an individual with speech/spelling disabilities by providing the ability to express his/herself through a picture based communication boa Create a product that can be utilized by all individuals with speech and spelling disabilities throughout the city of Rochester, and possibly the whole state of NY, contributing in a positive way to the community. Primary Market The primary market for this beverage container is the ARC of Monroe County Secondary Market Secondary markets for this communication board include any individual with speech and/or spelling disabilities, as well as children between the ages of 3 and 7. Stakeholders Stakeholders in the design of our product include the following: The ultimate consumers The ARC staff who interacts with the consumers regularly The families/friends of the consumer The visitors to any area in which the product is being used

EDGE™ Phase 0: Planning Staffing Requirements Mechanical Engineers 2 Students will use familiarity of prototype production to assist with: material selection, enclosure and keyboard design/fabrication, heating/cooling of the system, tray fixture and storage mechanism design/fabrication. Electrical Engineers 2 Students will focus on the embedded system; display driver (hardware and software) design, analog input/output circuit design, battery-based rechargeable power supply design and audio design. Industrial and Systems Engineers 1 Student will service as team leader for the project, will work closely with all of the team members to plan and assemble a product that addresses ALL of the customers needs. Student will focus on the ergonomic design of the board, and will also mentor/ support the other members of the team. Matt Zapotoski (ISE) Computer Engineers 1 Student will focus primarily on the design of the embedded software for the product, will work towards the design and development of an operating system that will meet all software preferences and needs of the customer. Industrial Designers 1 Student will set constraints for the engineers to work around, apply knowledge regarding the manufacture of systems to aid in the planning and development of the product and its subsystems, will help group design for the customer.

EDGE™ Phase 1: Concept Development Identify Customer Needs - Interviews Primary Customer(s) So far, multiple interviews have been conducted with the faculty guide Dr Phillips. The overviews were both very detailed and the primary objectives emphasized were captured. Lisa Drewski was interviewed on October 2 nd, the needs were refined and quantified as a result We remain in touch via email, and another meeting is tentative for Thursday Oct 18 th Other Stakeholder(s) The faculty guide to last year’s project: Dr Debartolo was interviewed on October 2 nd as well. She provided her insight regarding the positives and negatives of last years project, and will be a very valuable resource as the project progresses. Amy Feekes, the habilitation coordinator for Donna (the end consumer), has been conversed with via email and telephone, and will hopefully be met with this Thursday. Past Senior Design Team(s) This project is a continuation of a project that was completed last year (P07001). The team’s webpage on the edge website is currently available, as well as the engineering logbooks used by the team during senior design I and II from last year. The team’s final product is available for the team to use (benchmarking analysis, parts, etc)

EDGE™ Grading Assessment SD I Average expectations ( C ) Parameterized design of prototype system developed (proposed selection of system hardware and software materials, software and hardware engineering specifications) that COULD be implemented to evaluate functionality and user interface. Above average expectations ( B ) Average expectations PLUS a PC based test system that demonstrates the potential to be utilized by individual and ARS staff to evaluate optimal configuration and promote interaction between customer and others. Software and hardware designs (specs, flowcharts, drawings) complete, as well as completed BOM. Prototype of final enclosure designed Excellent ( A ) Everything above PLUS the actual development of a computer platform comprised of specified hardware and software components that CAN be utilized with individual and ARC staff to evaluate optimal configuration and interaction. Final concept design exists, all required deliverables submitted on time
20
EDGE™ Potential Risks/Issues Designing/constructing the product under the proposed budget of $1200 Meeting all of the deliverables and developing a product that the customer is happy with in 20 weeks - all customer needs attainable? (16 hrs of battery life and a fixture) TEAM versatility
21
EDGE™ Future Plan Where do you go from here? From this point, -I look forward to meeting with Dr Rickel to discuss the addition of an industrial design student to becoming involved in this project. -I plan on refining the work breakdown structure as necessary, as well as exploring tasks beyond week 3. -John Bonzo has been suggested as a viable resource in the construction of the custom enclosure, so I definitely have to meet with him within the next week. -I will contact Lisa to ensure that the final list of customer needs are all correct.
