Updating the UK Physical Activity Guidelines: Scientific Consensus Meeting Nanette Mutrie with help from BHFNC
2
What are PA guidelines? They are an evidence based statement on “how much” – contextualised with ‘for what’, ‘by whom’ – specifying intensity, (e.g., moderate, vigorous), duration (e.g., 30 min), frequency (e.g., 5–7 d/week) type / mode – (sometimes stated)

What we did before the meeting Creating working groups of academic experts from UK and including one international expert Drafted working papers based on a review of reviews of scientific evidence; mostly the US scientific report; canadian review, BASES ‘in review’ papers Listed suggestions on what changes should be included in new PA guidelines in UK – these are called “recommendations”

11
What we did at the meeting About 60 academics and stakeholders in total met to review the “recommendations” suggested in the working papers In plenary and breakout group sessions debated the science and the interpretation to get more feedback and revise the working paper “recommendations”
12
What we accomplished at the meeting We progressed the “recommendations” - editing and ‘tweaking’ the wording and intent We also raised understanding and recognition that statements that summarise the science (i.e. PA guidelines) are not the same as the “communication messages” needed to communicate to professionals and the community – these are different and sequential steps in the process
13
Since then …….. Expert working groups continued Comprised of the existing members + chairs International experts Draft the PA guidelines for 4 groups: early years; children and young people; adults; older adults Web consultation with the wider scientific and stakeholder community via web based consultation process – Nov-Dec2009
14
Timelines – roughly how we see it Web based consultation developed and undertaken: Nov Dec 2009 Review feedback: Jan 2010 Circulate and edit: Feb 2010 Final Technical report: March 2010 Meanwhile we plan on a UK wide CMO report and launch for 2010 –

Highlights from groups (see workshops with John Reilly, Dawn Skelton and Nanette Mutrie today also) Early years guidance being issued! Youth guidance unchanged – focus on engaging children in enjoyable activities Adults 150 minutes; vigorous; strength Older adults as above plus balance
