How To Grow Closer To God & His Word This Summer Psalm 46

I. Stop (Selah) Selah: a musical term indicating an instrumental solo so that one can reflect “Stop and consider” “Really think about what was said” “Don’t just say it. Live it. Let it in.”

We stop for what we love “You have persevered and have endured hardships for my name, and have not grown weary. Yet I hold this against you: You have forsaken your first love. Remember the height from which you have fallen! Repent and do the things you did at first.” (Rev. 2:3-5)

When we are stressed, troubled and fearful, our main job is to be in communion with God not to be in control like God

To “Selah” is to stop to focus and be filled with the one we love and with the truth we confess to live by.

II. Study (Scriptures) “The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us.” (Jn 1:14) “The precepts of the Lord are right, giving joy to the heart.” (Ps 19:8)

Each chapter ask/journal: 1. What does God promise? 2. What picture of God do I see? 3. What problem of life is here? 4. What principle should I live by? 5. What is God’s personal message to me?

III. Sing (Songs of Love & Joy) “The Lord your God is with you, he is mighty to save. He will take great delight in you, he will quiet you with his love, he will rejoice over you with singing.” (Zep 3:17)

“Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.” (Eph 5:19-20)

Singing (privately) isn’t a personality or an ability. It’s the power of what is in our hearts flowing out of us Your heart was made to sing

“My heart is steadfast, O God; I will sing and make music with all my soul... I will praise you, O Lord,.. For great is your love, higher than the heavens; your faithfulness reaches to the skies. Be exalted, O God” (Ps 108:1-5)

“I will sing to the Lord all my life; I will sing praise to my God as long as I live. May my meditation be pleasing to him, as I rejoice in the Lord.” (Psalm 104:33-34)

Our personalities, abilities and backgrounds may affect our comfort and connection levels in public worship. But the ultimate (& long term) reason we don’t sing to God is because He is not the song our hearts are singing!

“ For God does speak—now one way, now another— though man may not perceive it.” (Job 33:14) “I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you and watch over you.” (Ps 32:8)

“My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one can snatch them out of my hand.” (Jn 10:27-28)

“For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, “This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me.”

In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.” For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes. (1 Co 11:23-26)
