3 April 17, 2009Ohio Athletic Trainers Board3 Ohio Licensure Requirement Per ORC 4755.62 (A):  No person shall claim to the public to be an athletic trainer or imply by words, actions, or letters that the person is an athletic trainer unless the person is licensed as an athletic trainer, or otherwise engage in the practice of athletic training.

4 April 17, 2009Ohio Athletic Trainers Board4 What Does ORC 4755.62 Mean?  Unlicensed persons cannot: Refer to themselves as an “athletic trainer” Represent themselves as an “athletic trainer” Engage in the practice of athletic training  These restrictions apply to individuals licensed/certified as ATs in another state but not currently licensed in Ohio  There is no grace period that allows a certified AT to work pending the Ohio license

5 April 17, 2009Ohio Athletic Trainers Board5 Licensure vs. Certification  It is illegal to practice as an AT in Ohio without valid Ohio license  The Ohio license must be issued prior to practicing athletic training in Ohio  BOC certification alone does not authorize an athletic trainer to practice in Ohio

6 April 17, 2009Ohio Athletic Trainers Board6 Approval of an Event OAC 4755-43-11  Organizer of an event at which non-Ohio licensed ATs will provide athletic training services must apply to AT Section for approval of the event  Example would be USA Track and Field Championships  Does not apply to ATs traveling with a visiting team  Approval form on Board’s website

7 April 17, 2009Ohio Athletic Trainers Board7 Exemptions from Licensure  Exemptions specified in ORC 4755.65  Non-Ohio licensed AT traveling with visiting team/organization for purpose of only providing athletic training to the visiting team/organization  Providing services at an approved AT event  Students in CAATE programs completing clinical education requirements

8 April 17, 2009Ohio Athletic Trainers Board8 Recent Rules Changes  4755-43-07 – Criminal Records Checks Requires all applicants for initial Ohio license to submit the results of BCI and FBI criminal records check Does not apply for license renewal  4755-43-08 – License Renewal Changes expiration date for AT licenses Was May 15, now September 30 All AT licensees will renew in even years

9 April 17, 2009Ohio Athletic Trainers Board9 Proposed Rules Changes  4755-41-01 – Code of Ethics Proposing changes to public conduct of licensees Add provision stating that ATs can’t document or bill for services not actually provided Clarify restrictions related to boundary violations and sexual harassment  4755-43-06 – License Reinstatement Clarify the CE required for individuals reinstating an expired Ohio license

10 April 17, 2009Ohio Athletic Trainers Board10 Proposed Rules Changes  4755-45-01 – Continuing Education Reduce # of hours required from 50 to 25 Eliminate First Aid & CPR as acceptable CE activities Clarify that poster presentations count in the presentation category Expand on what’s included as self-study Grant CE for graduation from a NATA accredited post-professional athletic training education program

11 April 17, 2009Ohio Athletic Trainers Board11 Other Proposed CE Changes Changes in CE category limits  Professional workshops, seminars, and/or conferences – minimum of 5 hours (was 10)  Post-graduate courses – maximum of 20 hours (was 40)  Self-study – max. of 20 hours (was 40)  No change in ethics requirement Still need at least 1 hour each renewal  Proposed effective date of 5/16/2009
