Mathematics Formative Assessment System (MFAS) Formative assessment is a process used by teachers and students during instruction that provides feedback to adjust ongoing teaching and learning to improve students’ achievement of intended instructional outcomes. (McManus, 2008, p. 3)
3
Formative vs. Summative Assessment Summative is an assessment OF learning. Formative is an assessment FOR learning. (Black, Harrison, Lee, Marshall, & Wiliam, 2004)
4
What is formative assessment? Reveals student thinking in addition to whether or not the answer is correct Embedded in instruction Reveals gaps in knowledge and understanding that derail student progress Targets instruction to strengthen the core concepts and processes essential for mathematics learning Used not only to “inform” instruction, but more importantly to “form” instruction.

What does MFAS offer? Development of tasks and rubrics for grades K-8 plus algebra and geometry 4+ tasks for each content standard in mathematics. Development of lesson study resource kits for K-8 and algebra and geometry Development and implementation of district and school facilitator training to support implementation
