2015-2016 Nevada Mathematics and Science (MSP) Program Grants Technical Assistance Meeting November 2014

Purpose of MSP Grant To increase the subject matter content knowledge for teachers in mathematics and/or science. To help improve teaching of mathematics and/or science. A total of $1,134,784.00 is available to support administration of the grant, new, and continuing projects in 2015-2016.

Alignment to the New Nevada Department of Education Goals: The 2015-2016 Mathematics and Science Partnership aligns to the Nevada Department of Education Goals of: Effective educators serving students at all levels All students graduate college and career ready Math and Science Partnership applications should address how the application correlates to these goals.

New Application Requirements for 2015-2016 Must Include: (1)Ways to improve K-3 or 6-8 content knowledge in mathematics and/or science in grades kindergarten through third grade and/or grades six through eight. Project must be aligned to the current Nevada Academic Content Standards in Mathematics and/or Science; (2)Cross regional participation as defined by the three Regional Professional Learning Projects (Minimum of 25% participation should be represented from one of the other two regions); (3)A distance learning component;

New Application Requirements for 2015-2016 Continued: (4) A minimum, 50% of the professional learning provided by Institutes of Higher Education (IHE) faculty; and (5) Provide the Nevada Department of Education (NDE) with a deliverable (as defined by grant application and approved by NDE) resulting from the project on August 30, 2016 (15% of the total grant funds will not be reimbursed until deliverable is received by NDE)

Timeline Applications are due on December 30 th at 12:00 PM Review of proposals in January 2015 Presentations from Finalists February 2015 Notice of Award to Program Directors in February 27, 2015 Possible budget amendments based on funding by the committee Deliverable and Annual Performance Reviews Due on August 30, 2016

MSP Review Committee The MSP Review Committee will consist of the following: Higher Ed Business Public State Board of Education Member Teachers – both math and science/elementary and secondary/ rural and urban. Administrator

Review of Applications First review will be a technical review conducted by NDE. Second review will consist of the MSP review committee using the rubric to evaluate each application. Third review will consist of presentations from the grant finalists to the MSP review committee.

Budget Based on teacher participation Cannot add expenses that were not requested in the original application Reductions based on actual participants Travel – only preapproved travel based on application will be reimbursed. Review committees may fund less than asked for in the proposal. 15% of funds will be held until the deliverable is received by NDE

Deliverables to submit to NDE Instructional Material Resource created by teachers in the grant based upon content learned. It must be received by NDE no later than August 30, 2016. MSP participant list with all requests for payment Evidence of alignment to Grade Level Nevada Academic Content Standards in Mathematics and Science Evidence of Charter and Nonpublic Schools requests for participation Evaluation

If your MSP Grant Application is funded: An NDE specialist will meet with the program Director at a minimum of 3 times a year Planning of PD; Observations (rubric created based on each grant application); and Post workshop discussion
