10
Investigating OA monograph services Publisher information Aim to improve transparency and accountability by identifying requirements for information from publishers Based on a review of existing sources: – Principles of transparency and accountability (COPE, OASPA, DOAJ) – OASPA membership guidelines – DOAJ and DOAB requirements Inform stakeholders about publishing process, peer review, publication charges, OA and licensing policies, etc Quick guide: www.oapen.org/content/guides-oa-monographswww.oapen.org/content/guides-oa-monographs
11
Publisher information on OA monographs Information about: – OA offering (service, business model) – Author charges – Peer review – Availability (different editions, OA edition) – Licensing – Author information and OA policy – Preservation Quick guide: www.oapen.org/content/guides-oa-monographswww.oapen.org/content/guides-oa-monographs
13
Investigating OA monograph services Metadata Aim to improve discovery, support management information Identifying requirements for metadata of OA books Review of existing metadata - for conventional books, for OA articles, from other sources (CrossRef, ONIX) Quick guide: www.oapen.org/content/guides-oa-monographswww.oapen.org/content/guides-oa-monographs
14
Metadata for OA monographs Metadata model based on 4 main parts: 1.Book: bibliographic information of book (or chapter), OA edition, funder information, etc 2.Creator: author, editor, etc 3.Format: digital format(s) of the book 4.Collection: collection(s) the book is part of Quick guide: www.oapen.org/content/guides-oa-monographswww.oapen.org/content/guides-oa-monographs
16
Investigating OA monograph services Green OA for books Explore potential for a ‘green’ route to OA books Alternative to ‘gold’, author fee based approach Involving all stakeholders, documenting views and considerations Aim: Establish viability of existing OA policies supporting ‘green’ deposit of articles - for books
17
Green OA for books Printed monograph remains the gold standard… Publishers: choose a hybrid approach: OA + print – Need to recover their costs through sales and/or BPC – Unlikely to allow self-archiving Authors: strong, personal attachment to their work – Protective of result – Unlikely to deposit final accepted manuscript
18
Green OA for books Round table discussion – Exploring alternative solutions to Gold/Green OA – Making books available OA without BPC’s (book processing charges) – Acceptable to authors and publishers
19
Three possible models… 1. Freemium model – Publishers provide basic OA to their books after certain period (3 years?) – Online only: no copying or downloading – Publishers sell other editions – Publishers can offer earlier OA at reduced charges 2. ‘Triggered’ OA – Publisher sets sales target – OA as soon as target is reached – Or after maximum period (5 years?) 3. Direct publication – Author manuscript published directly online – System to support peer review and dissemination
20
Investigating OA monograph services Next steps… Aggregating UK OA books (± 500) – Enrich metadata of publications – Connect publications to funders and institutions – Identify and integrate valuable dissemination channels Provide easy access, improve discovery Impact / reporting – Introduce metrics to measure impact of OA books (usage, citations, altmetrics) Demonstrate value of OA for books Pilot with alternative ‘non BPC’ models?

2. OPERAS A pan-European e-infrastructure for open access publishing in the Social Sciences and Humanities
22
OPERAS “Open access Publications in European Research Areas for Social Sciences and Humanities” Open Science devide between sciences (STM) and HSS: Transition to OA is slower Publishing landscape is fragmented Language barriers Research output in part through monographs and edited collections Publishers are often smaller, less profitable, or non profit As a result HSS Researchers have Less access to primary research (fragmented collections) Less tools to support advanced research Less impactful publishing services
23
OPERAS A collaborative project to support open access publishing and the transition to open science in humanities and social sciences (HSS) Pan-European, distributed e-infrastructure Support OA publishing in HSS Improve access and discovery Provide tools and services for research Promote good practise

OPERAS - Goals Joining forces to create scale and impact: Enable Open Science in HSS Develop and share services among partner platforms Create a single access point to improve access and dissemination Promote good practises for OA publishing Explore metrics for impact and research evaluation in HSS Provide training to stakeholders
27
OPERAS – Projects (1) Horizon2020 proposal: ‘Support to international cooperations for e-infrastructures’ (INFRASUPP-3-2016) Objective: Design study for OPERAS as collaborative initiative Governance model, sustainability plan, legal entity Technical and service requirements Develop network, community building, identifying stakeholders
28
OPERAS – Projects (2) Horizon2020 proposal: ‘User-driven e-infrastructure innovation’ (EINFRA-22-2016) Support for design and prototyping of innovative e-infrastructure services Objective: Develop and share a layer of essential services for OA monographs among existing e-publishing platforms to support open science in HSS
