E-books at the Alliance Changes to DDA: Open Call December 10, 2015
2
Goals and Objectives Build a broadly useful collection Diversify publisher list Improve cost stability and predictability Improve percentage of budget devoted to purchase Reduce barriers to access (e.g., DRM-free content, ADA compliance, easy to use interface) Minimize impact of fluctuating title pool
3
Assumptions for Changes Keep Academic Complete subscription E-Book budget remains $1 million a year in total Changes apply to the DDA component of program only (~$750,000)
4
Evidence-Based Acquisitions (EBA) Fixed cost negotiated between vendor / consortium Discovery pool of titles made available to patrons for 6 months - 1 year Use data pulled and analyzed Funds applied to purchase titles that were well used by many libraries
5
Options # 1: EBA with Aggregator Pros: Lots of Publishers Single workflow Low to No DRM – selected platforms Cons: Not all desired publishers May be redundant with local projects # 2: EBA with Publisher(s) Pros: Choice of publishers More titles available than with DDA or aggregator EBA Low to No DRM Cons: Limited # of publishers Multiple workflows May be redundant with local projects Multiple publisher agreements mean multiple interfaces
6
Options # 3: Different DDA with EBL Pros: Apply loan fees to purchase price Keep costs more manageable Consistency with current program Cons: Costs still unpredictable Clunky DRM #4 : Publisher purchase Pros: Desired content/ publisher Low cost per title Cons: No use evidence

Discussion & Questions
8
Question We are keeping Academic Complete as part of our centrally-provided e-book portfolio. Given that, is there a desire for the remaining budget to be spent on front list content?
9
