2 Aim #3: How did the United States get involved in World War II? Do Now: Read the primary source and analyze the political cartoon in the packet, and answer the questions that follow.

3 I. America helps the Allies A.Many Americans were isolationists and did not want to get involved in the war. B.Still, U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt wants to help the Allies. Why?

4 I. America helps the Allies C. Lend-Lease Act (March, 1941): Allowed President Roosevelt to lend or lease weapons and other supplies to any country vital to the United States. We will be the Arsenal of Democracy. D. Atlantic Charter (August, 1941): A declaration issued by Roosevelt and Churchill praising free trade and democracy. How is Germany going to feel about the United States doing this?

5 II. America and Japan A.The United States was angry about Japan’s imperialism in China. Japan had: 1. Invaded China’s northeast province, Manchuria (1931) then invaded the whole country of China (1937). 2. Stolen many of China’s natural resources (iron, coal) to build up their economy 3. Tortured and killed many Chinese people Rape of Nanking: In 1937, Japan captured the Chinese city of Nanking. They killed hundreds of thousands of civilians and raped 20,000- 80,000 women.

6 II. America and Japan B. U.S. is worried that Japan’s growing Asian Empire threatens American-controlled territories of the Philippines, Guam and Hawaii in the Pacific.

7 II. America and Japan C. The U.S. decides to punish Japan by giving money to China and cutting off Japan’s supply of oil. How is Japan going to feel about this? What can they do to get revenge?

8 II. America and Japan D. On December 7, 1941, the Japanese bomb the American naval base at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. Within two hours, the Japanese sunk or damaged 18 ships. 2,400 Americans were killed, another 1,000 wounded. E. On December 8, Congress declares war on Japan.
