Momentum and Impulse Concepts Mr. Schlamb
2
Bell Ringer What is momentum include the equation and units What is impulse include the equation and units Which has more momentum a baseball traveling at 5 m/s or a softball traveling at the same speed? Explain.
3
Impulse The equation for impulse is derived from Newton’s second law of motion F=ma where a=v/t so F=m(v/t) multiply both sides by t and you get Ft=mv Impulse can be increased in two ways 1.Increase the force (decrease give) 2.Increase the time interval over which a force acts
4
Impulse A large force over a small amount of time will have the same impulse if you siwtch the values. Ex. 30N(1s)=30Ns or 1N(30s)=30Ns Same impulse in both This concept is used when making safety features in vehicles
5
Momentum The other side of Newton’s modified second law of motion Ft=mv is momentum Momentum is represented by p so p=mv Momentum can be increased in two ways 1.Increase the mass 2.Increase the velocity at which the mass is moving
6
Momentum and Impulse Momentum and impulse are both direct correlations If one value is doubled and the other value is kept the same the final value will be doubled Same as if a value is tripled the final value will be three times a large as the original value https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XFhnt Pxow0U https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XFhnt Pxow0U

Momentum and Impulse Assume I throw a baseball (0.145 kg) at a speed of 52 m/s what is the momentum? Aroldis Chapmans can throw a baseball twice as fast as I can what is the momentum if he throws the baseball? You swing a baseball bat with a force of 450N and you make contact with Aroldis Chapmans pitch. You maintain contact with the ball for 0.5s. What is the impulse?
