2
MAIN CHALLENGES OF CHORNOBYL EXCLUSION ZONE MANAGEMENT RAW management during long-term storage and disposal; Prevention of radioactivity leakage outside of ChEZ; Radiation protection of personnel; Providing environmental radiation and phytosanitary monitoring; Maintaining appropriate sanitary condition and fire safety.
3
RESULT OF evacuation of public and cessation of activities RESULTED IN recovery of natural environment REMEDIATION
4
CONTAMINATION OF EXCLUSION ZONE WITH Cs-137
5
Monitoring Profile The objective is to ensure information support for administrative decisions aimed at mitigating consequences of an accident resulting from radionuclide transfer outside Exclusion Zone. Radionuclide flows that form public and personnel exposure have priority for surveillance. MONITORING AS ORGANIZATIONAL SUBSYSTEM
6
Determination of the most dangerous territories and objects from the point of exposure formation and potential migration of radionuclides in various media and out of Exclusion Zone; Radiation protection of emergency personnel and the population of the adjacent territories; Support of administrative decisions aimed at mitigating consequences of an accident; Information support for research. FUTURE PROSPECTS OF CHORONOBYL EXCLUSION ZONE

CONCLUSIONS 1. Today’s main challenges of ChEZ management comprise sanitary and radiation monitoring. 2. Environmental radiation monitoring allows generating new knowledge about: Physicochemical transformation of radiation contamination; Transport of radionuclides in the changing environment; Fluctuation of radiation and hydrochemical factors. 3. Environmental radiation monitoring is a powerful tool for: Development of decontamination and remediation technologies; Development of methodology for environmental studies of radioactively contaminated ecosystems. 4. With introduction of certain improvements, the environmental radiation monitoring can provide valuable data for long-term prognosis, modeling and research.
