TOPIC: Scientific Method Aim: Explain the steps of the Scientific Method. Do Now: Take out last night’s HW’ Lab Safety Activity Part 1 (4 MINUTES) HW: Finish Lab Safety Activity Part 1
2
Write the PAGE NUMBERS next to each question to help you find the answer. 1.(line 6) 2.(line 6) 3.(lines 6 and 7) 4.(line 7) 5.(lines 7 and 8) 6.(line 8) 7.(line 8) 9. (line 8)
3
1. Identify the 1 st step of the scientific method in THREE WORDS. State the PROBLEM Asking a QUESTION
4
Problem Under what color light will plants grow best?
5
2. Identify the 2 nd step of the scientific method. Do background research -by observing -by studying books, the Internet or other sources
6
3. Identify the 3 rd step of the scientific method. Form a hypothesis –An educated guess
7
4. What is the hypothesis based on? (How do you come up with your hypothesis? Background research
8
Research Plants absorb light to produce their food during photosynthesis. Plants contain the pigment chlorophyll. Plants produce sugar (glucose).
9
Hypothesis I think the plant under green light will grow best because plants are green.
10
5. Identify the 4 th step of the scientific method. Perform experiments to test the hypothesis.
11
Experiment 1.Grow the plants for 5 weeks. 2.Each is placed under a certain color light. 3.They will get the same amount of light, & will be watered every 2 days. 4.Their height will be measured (in centimeters) once a week.
12
6. Identify what is tested when performing an experiment. Hypothesis
13
7. Identify the 5 th step of the scientific method. Analyze the results of the experiment.
14
8. CIRCLE the choice to identify the meaning of the term analyze in line 8 in the reading. a.to ignore b.to study closely c.to combine d.to make
15
7. Identify the 5 th step of the scientific method. Analyze the results of the experiment. Make observations
16

22
9. Identify the 6 th step of the scientific method. Draw a conclusion.
23
What does the conclusion state? Was your hypothesis right or wrong? Did the experiment disprove the hypothesis? Did the hypothesis match the results of the experiment?
24
2 4 6 8 10 12 Height (cm) PLANTS 123456 Growth of plants Analayze results
25
Conclusion My hypothesis was wrong. Plants grow best under blue light, not green light. The plant under blue light grew 11cm while the plant under green light grew only 2 cm.
26
1.Problem 2.Research 3.Hypothesis 4.Experiment 5.Analyze results 6.Conclusion Steps of the scientific method
27
Let’s summarize… 1.List the steps of the scientific method. Problem, Research, Hypothesis, Experiment, Analyze data, Conclusion 2. Explain the difference between the problem and the hypothesis. The problem is the question and the hypothesis is your educated guess. 3. What are you testing when performing an experiment? The hypothesis 4. What is used to make observations? 5 senses – sight, hearing, touch, taste, smell 5. Describe an example of an observation. His shirt is blue. It is hot in the room. The substance smells like banana. 6. Identify what the conclusion states. Whether your hypothesis is correct or incorrect.
28
Review: The first step in the scientific method is a.to state the problem b.experimentation c.to state the hypothesis d.draw a conclusion
29
When performing an experiment, you are testing the a.problem b.hypothesis c.data d.conclusion
30
An educated guess to the problem of an experiment is known as a a.variable b.theory c.hypothesis d.law
31
Your senses can be used to make a(n) a.observation b.conclusion c.hypothesis d.problem
