Yoga and Yoga therapy is based on the
Scientific model of five sheaths of the human body and consciousness that is described in our ancient Indian scriptures that is referred as “Pancha-Kosha”.

IAYT APPLICATION THROUGH PANCHA – KOSHA MODEL
Annamaya – “anna means food”. It’s the physical body. Characterized by – Body Disorders. Example – Diabetes, Heart-disease. Solution – Specific Asanasa and Kriyas. b) Pranamaya – “prana means vital force or energy”.It’s the breath. Characterized by – Irregular and disturbed breathing pattern. Solution – Slowdown and regulate the breath through Specific pranayama. c) Manomaya - “mano means thoughts and emotions”.It’s the mind. Characterized by – Negative Emotions.Examples –Anger, hatred, Outbursts and shouting. Solution – Meditation and Awareness sessions.

Vignanamaya – means Buddhi/Intellect.Reasoning ability of
the mind. Characterized by – Wrong Notions Solution – Self Analysis through Yogic Counselling. Anandamaya – ananda means joy. Characterized by – Un-Satiated craving for union with the Universal soul Solution – Doing actions that we love and enjoy. Experienced through Relaxed Skilled Action without expectation and finding joy.

Larry Payne, Ph.D. Samata Yoga Center (U.S.A.) Yoga therapy adapts the practice of Yoga to the needs of people with specific or persistent health problems not usually addressed in a group class. Art Brownstein, M.D: Yoga therapy consists of the application of yogic principles, methods, and techniques to specific human ailments. In its ideal application, Yoga therapy is preventive in nature, as is Yoga itself, but it is also restorative in many instances, palliative in others, and curative in many others.

Differences between Yoga Client-Yoga-Therapy Client-Yoga Teacher-Yoga-Therapist
Yoga - Client’s Life-style Assessment(CLAS) is not required, YT – Client’s Life-style Assessment(CLAS) is Vital to offer therapy. Yoga –focussed on Teaching - Learning, YT – focussed on helping client’s to overcome their health challenges or disorders Yoga Client – goes to class to exercise in a like minded community. YT Clients –seek relief from a Symptom/health condition. YI are qualified to teach Yoga. YT are qualified to treat health disorders.

Characteristics of Yoga - Therapy
YT – focus on Client needs – Why, What and How. Trained to Assess Clients through Listening, Questioning, Observing Correcting them – (LQOC). YT - establish Appropiate Goals, Design and Develop suitable practice and enable Clients to practice them. Yoga Therapist - role is less about Teaching Yoga, helping the Clients to overcome their challenges. Hence helps in Empowering the Clients to take Active role in their health condition.
