7 Sri-Lanka Tsunami Facts The World Bank’s support to Sri Lanka after the tsunami of December 26, 2004, was to mitigate the immediate suffering; assist people to regain their livelihoods; restore basic services to the affected population; and initiate the recovery and reconstruction process. 11 Facts about Children According to UNICEF, “Sri Lanka, where children account for 40% of the known death toll, has made an appeal for child counsellors” “In all, about one million people were directly Affected by the tsunami in Sri Lanka, many of them children.” According to the National Child Protection Authority (NCPA), 635 children were orphaned in Sri Lanka after the 2004 tsunami.
