Europe Fast Facts: There are five peninsulas in Europe. The Iberian Peninsula contains Spain and Portugal; the Balkan Peninsula has Albania and Greece; the Scandinavian Peninsula has Norway and Sweden; the Jutland peninsula has Denmark and Germany; and the Apennines peninsula contains San Marino and Italy.

Most countries in Europe belong to the European Union. Many countries share the Euro as their official currency. The Vatican City is the smallest country in Europe.

Australia Fast Facts: One third of Australia is desert. Australia is the only nation to govern an entire continent. With 25.4 million heads of cattle, Australia is the world’s largest exporter of beef. The Great Barrier Reef is the only natural structure you can see from space.

Antarctica Fast Facts: Antarctica is the highest, driest, windiest, emptiest, coldest place on earth. At its thickest point the ice sheet is 4,776 meters deep and averages 2, 160 meters thick. This is 90 percent of all the world's ice and it is 70 percent of all the world's fresh water. The mean annual temperature at the South Pole is minus 56 degrees F. All warm-blooded animals living on and around Antarctica--whales, seals, sea birds, penguins--rely on thick layers of blubber to insulate them from the cold.

South America Fast Facts: The Amazon River carries more water than any other river in the world, about twenty percent of the fresh water that flows into the world's oceans.

The Amazon River is the second longest river in the world. About 20% of earth's oxygen is produced by the Amazon rainforest. The world's largest tropical rainforest, Amazonia, covers more than half of Brazil. The canopy contains half of the world's species.

More than 20% of the Amazon rainforest has been destroyed and is gone forever. The land is being cleared for cattle ranches, mining operations, logging, and subsistence agriculture.

North America Fast Facts: North America is the 3rd largest continent. North America is the only continent that has every kind of climate. Mount McKinley, in Alaska, is the tallest point on the continent. Death Valley, in California, is the lowest point on the continent. Lake Superior is the largest fresh water lake in the world.

Alaska accounts for 25% of the oil produced in the United States. Prudhoe Bay, on the northern Alaskan coast, is North America's largest oil field.

Governor Romney wants to aggressively expand offshore oil and gas drilling — including along the coasts of Virginia and the Carolinas — as part of a broader effort to reach energy independence. In 2010 BP leaked millions of barrels of oil in the Gulf of Mexico and left 11 workers dead. The proposal may win votes in Virginia, where drilling would bring jobs and state revenues, but would be controversial in Florida, where offshore drilling has long been viewed as a threat to tourism.
