So, You Inherited a Database David Easley Database Administrator Babcock and Wilcox

Questions to ask What is the database used for? Who has access to it? Is that access required? Are there any special requirements for access to the database? HIPPA, SOX, Etc. Is it fully patched? If not can it be? What is the acceptable downtime and/or data loss? Does the architecture and backup schedule meet these needs? Is the database external facing? If so, how is it protected. How is the overall Server Health? Are there organizational standards that have not been met? Is the Server correctly configured to alert on errors? What Questions would you add?

Triage using sp_blitz by Brent Ozar Script can be downloaded from www.brentozar.com/sp_blitzwww.brentozar.com/sp_blitz Sp_blitz gives quick insight into your server to see what issues you should start looking at in a prioritized manner. NOT EVERYTHING HAS TO BE CHANGED. You must evaluate for your environment Once you have fixed the issues that need to be addressed, save a copy of the results to compare future runs to, I would recommend running at least every 6 months or so(and check to make sure you have any updates to sp_blitz) DEMO

Create a Central Management Server DEMO Things to remember: TSQL needs to be written in a way that all responding servers use the same format You cannot add the CMS server to itself Servers can be in multiple groups( I have groups by environment and server edition) and you can connect to parent groups

IDERA SQL Check Available from http://www.idera.com/productssolutions /freetools/sqlcheck http://www.idera.com/productssolutions /freetools/sqlcheck Provides 20 different metrics into your sql server DEMO Other free tools

Ola Hallengren Maintenance Scripts Scripts available on http://ola.hallengren.com/http://ola.hallengren.com/ Highly recommended as the basis for your maintenance scripts. DEMO

SQL Sentry Plan Explorer Available from https://www.sqlsentry.com/products/plan- explorer/sql-server-query-view https://www.sqlsentry.com/products/plan- explorer/sql-server-query-view Much more powerful, flexible and usable than the SSMS built in execution plan viewer DEMO
