Bull Run First Battle after Fort Sumter Significance of Fort Sumter? Army of 30,000 Union soldiers marched from Washington, D.C. to the Confederate capitol of Richmond, VA. Why Richmond? Both armies were new recruits and inexperienced General Thomas Jackson stood in battle and General Bee shouted, “There stands like a stone wall... Rally!” An insult? Became known as Stonewall Jackson
