1. Are the top EM applicants declining to interview earlier in 2015: A review of declined invitations from 2013-2015 Bradley S. Are there a greater number of early cancellations of undesired EM interview invitations by the top applicants? One of the major discussion points of EM program directors has been that the top Emergency Medicine (EM) applicants, identified by high USMLE scores and AOA status, are applying to too many EM programs and accepting more interviews than is necessary based on their above average academic credentials. In addition to the substantial time and cost associated with interviews, there are a finite number of interview spots. As a result, some of the EM applicants in the middle and lower tiers, who are solid EM applicants, are struggling to obtain enough interviews. As a point of emphasis, EM program directors (PDs) are now making a more concerted effort to advise the top students about the number of programs to apply and interviews to accept. They are also encouraging the top applicants to cancel undesired interviews earlier in the application cycle to preserve opportunities for other applicants to schedule interviews. Curricular Design Interview statistics from 2013-2015 from the ERAS database and Interview Broker were reviewed and collated and are listed on the attached table. The number of cancellations, time to cancellation, AOA status and USMLE scores were reviewed. The same criteria for invitation to interview was used during all 3 years. The average USMLE scores of the declining applicants was consistent across all 3 years. The number of total interviews offered during the early invitation period (Sept 24- Oct 10) averaged 85 invitations per year. During years 2013 and 2014 a mean of 87 invitations were sent and 2015, 85 invitations were sent. The average number of cancellations from October during the 13/14 seasons was 12 and the average number during the month of November for years 13/14 was 10. In 2015 the number of cancellations from October was 23 and the number during the month of November was 2. When comparing the data between the 2013/2014 and 2015 interview seasons, the trend appears that top applicants are not only cancelling more interviews, but that they are cancelling them earlier in the application cycle.
