C LOSE R EAD Requires students to get truly involved with the text they are reading. The purpose is to teach students to notice features and language used by the author.

S TEPS IN C LOSE R EADING First Read : Look at Text Features {Gist} Guide Words, Title Page, Table of Content, Index, Glossary, Heading, subheading, Keywords, Illustrations and photographs,Captions, Diagrams, Labels, Text box, Maps, Charts: schedules, tables, etc. ; number and “chunk” information Second Read : Begin to Annotate the text Circle unfamiliar words, phrases ; Use symbols to represent confusion, agreement/disagreement, questions, making connections Third Read : Answer guided questions/Cite evidence Main idea, author’s purpose, intended audience, etc.

F IRST R EAD (G IST ) Highlight the Title and Author Circle the subtitles, illustrations/photographs in the article Number and “chunk” the paragraphs of information Read the caption What can you predict about the text based on the text features?

S ECOND R EAD (A NNOTATE ) Underline unfamiliar words or phrases Use these symbols to represent ? Unclear… Agree… Disagree... ***Make a Connection… Be prepared to explain /expound on your thinking

T HIRD R EADING Answer four (4) Guided Reading questions and cite evidence from the text to support your responses… Explain the main idea of the article…cite 2 details to support your thinking

T URN & T ALK TURN to your neighbor and TALK about what you have learned on Close Reading and how you are going to use this strategy in your classes.
