Linking the Triarchic Model of Psychopathy to the MMPI-2-RF Jade A. Petty 1, Dustin B. Wygant, Ph.D. 1, Martin Sellbom, Ph.D. 2 1 Eastern Kentucky University 2 The Australian National University Introduction Psychopathy is a personality disorder characterized by deficits in: Affect: callous, poor affect recognition, low stress, fearlessness Interpersonal functioning: poor attachment, domineering, conning/manipulative Behavior: aggression, irresponsibility, impulsivity Psychopathy has been assessed using a variety of instruments: Psychopathy Checklist (PCL-R) Psychopathic Personality Inventory (PPI-R) Triarchic Psychopathy Measure (TriPM) Patrick, Fowles, and Krueger (2009) developed the Triarchic Model of Psychopathy to tie in various theories and assessment models of the disorder Captures the phenotypic variance of psychopathy in three domains: Boldness: Fearlessness, dominance, and proneness for risk-taking Meanness: Callousness, explotativeness, and poor attachment Disinhibition: Deficient behavioral constraint, aggression, and a lack of planfulness The Current Study Goal of the current study was to examine how the MMPI-2 Restructured Form scales load onto the Triarchic domains of psychopathy We hypothesized: Boldness would be associated with scales capturing low fear (MSF [-]), assertiveness (IPP [-], AGGR-R), low stress/anxiety (NEGE-R [-], AXY [-], STW [-]) Meanness would be associated with scales capturing aggression (AGG, AGGR-R), anger (ANP), poor attachment (DSF) Disinhibition would be associated with scales capturing antisociality (RC4, JCP, BXD), disconstraint (DISC-R), substance abuse (SUB), and negative emotionality (NEGE-R, RC7) Method Participants 139 incarcerated male offenders Age: 34.5 (SD = 9.9) Education: 12.0 (SD = 1.2) Ethnicity: 59% Caucasian, 37% African-American, 4% other ethnicity Offenses: 63% violent [25% homicide-related], 25% sexual offenses, 22% drug-offenses Measures Psychopathy Checklist-Revised (PCL-R; Hare, 2003) Psychopathic Personality Inventory-Revised (PPI-R; Lilienfeld & Widows, 2005) Triarchic Psychopathy Measure (TriPM; Patrick, 2010) Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2 Restructured Form (MMPI-2-RF; Ben-Porath & Tellegen, 2008/2011) Results Exploratory Structural Equation Model Exploratory Structural Equation Modeling (ESEM) to identify the Triarchic constructs Indicators: 4 facets of the PCL-R 8 content scales of the PPI-R 3 scales of the TriPM Model exhibited mediocre fit (CFI=.91, RMSEA=.10, SRMR=.045) Factor loadings conformed to a conceptually accepted pattern Model was accepted as a latent representation of the triarchic psychopathy domains (Boldness, Meanness, Disinhibition) Correlational analyses We correlated the 3 latent triarchic factors with the MMPI- 2-RF substantive scales TriarchicEIDTHDBXDRCdRC1RC2RC3RC4RC6RC7RC8RC9 Boldness-.50.010.30-.39-.31-.39.04.11.001-.36-.08.33 Meanness-.22-.02.33-.19-.15-.08.06.21.05-.27-.11.218 Disinhibition.48.33.76.56.24.18.47.70.39.54.33.67 TriarchicMLSGICHPCNUCCOG Boldness.11-.33-.20-.18-.11 Meanness.21-.17-.15-.03.02 Disinhibition.04.07.25.20.54 TriarchicJCPSUBAGGACTFMLIPPSAVSHYDSFAESMEC Boldness.15.08.11-.04-.06-.34 -.39-.03.16.08 Meanness.19.12.25-.21.001-.14-.02-.19 -.17-.002 Disinhibition.53.49.68.28.46-.25-.03.28.27-.11.06 TriarchicAGGR-rPSYC-rDISC-rNEGE-rINTR-r Boldness.46-.05.37-.42-.33 Meanness.31-.08.38-.24.007 Disinhibition.46.26.65.56-.03 TriarchicSUIHLPSFDNFCSTWANPAXYBRFMSF Boldness-.01-.24-.47-.41-.38.01-.19-.13-.32 Meanness-.08-.09-.23-.16-.24.22-.20.01-.31 Disinhibition.17.38.36.50.66.31.21.07 Discussion The triarchic model can be captured using the MMPI-2-RF Boldness: Associated with low fear (MSF), social dominance (IPP, AGGR-R), and low negative emotionality (NEGE-R, AXY, STW) Meanness: Associated with aggression (AGG, AGGR-R, anger (ANP,) and poor attachment (DSF) Results were not as strong as the other two domains Disinhibition: Associated with antisocial behavior (RC4, JCP, BXD), poor behavioral control (DISC-R), high levels of negative emotionality (NEGE-R, RC7), and substance abuse (SUB) *Bolding indicates significant correlations
