PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL PROPERTIES of MATTER
2
Warm up Please do Day 4 questions on your warm up sheet. We will then go over the answers to these questions as a class. We will be starting a new unit today: Unit 3 is Matter.
3
Learning Target I can understand the difference between physical and chemical properties on matter.
4
What is Matter? Matter is anything that has a mass and takes up a space. Ex: Book, chair, table………. But…… how can we describe or talk about matter? Talk about color, shape, phase ( solid, liquid, gas & plasma) and odor. (Physical properties) Talk about its acidity. Does it burn, rust or rot? ( chemical properties)
5
LAB Look at the 6 samples in the test tubes.
Remember that matter is anything that has mass and takes up space. The physical properties of matter are characteristics used to describe it including: state, size, shape, color and texture. List physical properties of each sample. Try to identify each.
6
Answers to Lab Test tube A = Soda (Coke) Test tube B = Water Test tube C = Viniger Test tube D = Sugar Test tube E = Salt Test tube F = Air

Reading time Lets read pages and ( In the Blue Science textbook)

PROPERTIES You used physical properties of matter to ___________________________ the substances. II. ___________________________: Characteristic of matter A. Chemical Property: How it ___________________________ with other substances Examples: 1. ___________________________ reacts with baking soda giving off carbon dioxide gas. 2. ______________________ (burning): Substance reacts with oxygen giving off heat and light. 3. Gold generally does _________ react with other substances. B. Physical Properties: Property of a substance that can be observed ___________________________ changing the identity of the substance 1. Types a. Special Physical Properties i. Don’t ___________________________. ii. Uses: 1) To identify ______________________ substances (Activity at the beginning of class) 2) To identify ___________________________ substance for a specific use
9
( Think , pair, share) Using Physical Properties to find the best use for a substance:
a) Why are automobile tires made of rubber and not of steel? b) Why are beams in buildings made of steel and not rubber? c) Why are windows made of glass and not copper? d) What are some properties of ink that make it useful for writing?
10
iii. Examples of Special Physical Properties:
1) _________________ at room temperature 2) ___________________________ 3) ___________________________ 4) Freezing point ) Boiling point 6) ___________________________ 7) ________________________ how shiny 8) Conductor of ____________________ 9) Conductor of ______________________ 10) _________________ - drawn into wires 11) Malleable - hammered into thin sheets (Opposite: _______________________) 12) Viscosity ) Hardness
11
Let’s Match it Up! Physical Properties Chemical properties
Color Odor acidity Basicity Mass volume Reactivity Texture Shape Combustion Length
12
Exit Ticket Please do the exit ticket on the board
1. Name 4 physical properties and 4 chemical properties. 2. Matter is any thing that _________________ and has a mass.
