Authoritarian: Limits without Freedom Definition: Parents’ word is law, parents have absolute control. Misconduct is punished Affection and praise are rarely given Parents try to control child’s behavior and attitudes They value unquestioned obedience Children are told what to do, how to do it, and where to do it, and when to do it.
5
Outcomes of Authoritarian Style Obedient Distrustful Discontent Withdrawn Unhappy Hostile Not High Achievers Often Rebel Children from authoritarian homes are so strictly controlled, either by punishment or guilt, that they are often prevented from making a conscious choice about particular behavior because they are overly concerned about what their parents will do.
6
Authoritative/Democratic: Freedom within limits Definition: Stress freedom along with rights of others and responsibilities of all Parents set limits and enforce rules – loves and limits Firm control but fair – Reasoning behind it Respect children’s interest, opinions, unique personalities. – Willing to listen to questions & requests Combine control with encouragement Reasonable expectations and realistic standards.
7
Outcomes of Authoritative Style Happy Mostly self-reliant Mostly self- controlled Content, friendly, generous Cooperative High-achiever Less likely to be seriously disruptive or delinquent Children whose parents expect them to perform well, to fulfill commitments, and to participate actively in family duties, as well as family fun, learn how to formulate goals. They also experience the satisfaction that comes from meeting responsibilities and achieving success.
8
Permissive: Freedom without limits Definition: Parents allow their children to do their own thing. Little respect for order and routine. Parents make few demands on children Parents are resources rather than standard makers Rarely punish, low discipline Non controlling, non-demanding Children walk all over the parents
9
Outcome of Permissive Parenting Aggressive Least self- reliant Least self- controlled Least exploratory Most unhappy Children from permissive homes receive so little guidance that they often become uncertain and anxious about whether they are doing the right thing.
10
Negligent Permissive: Uninvolved Does not provide children with guidance Has low parental demands Low/no response to child’s requests or needs Results: Hostility Anti-social Delinquent behavior Low psychosocial development Low academic levels
11
Four Parenting Styles Authoritarian: Limits without freedom Limits without freedom Permissive: Total freedom with no limits Total freedom with no limits Authoritative/Democratic: Freedom within limits Freedom within limits Negligent/Permissive/Uninvolved: Uninvolved parents Uninvolved parents

Question: Is there a right or wrong way to parent? Discussion: Is one parenting style better than the other? Is one parenting style better than the other? What effect does each parenting style have on children? What effect does each parenting style have on children? What can happen when two parents have conflicting parenting styles? WIFE SWAP FAMILIES: Can you guess which styles these families use?
17
The Heene family from Colorado live life on the edge. Wife Mayumi and storm scientist Richard take their three kids, Bradford (8), Ryo (7) and Falcon (5), out of school to go on storm chasing missions to prove Richard's theories about magnetic fields and gravity. If conditions are right, Mayumi wakes her family by shouting "Storm Approaching, Storm Approaching!" into a bullhorn. The family sleep in their clothes so they can leap out of bed and into the storm- mobile. At home the family are as chaotic as a twister: the kids have no table manners and throw themselves around the house, and while Richard devotes every moment to his research, he expects Mayumi to cook, clean and run the house without any help.

On a quiet street in Connecticut, the Martel family -- wife Karen, husband Jay and their two kids, Max (11) and Dean (10) -- live a life of calm and safety. Dad is so committed to safety that he runs a child- proofing business devoted to identifying dangers and risks and making sure kids stay out of harm's way. With all the precautions taken to keep them safe, Max and Dean seem to be afraid of everything..."you can fall down the stairs, get cancer from the microwave, get tapeworms from sushi, and the lava lamp could explode..." The Martels conduct safety fire drills, make sure the kids wear protective gear on their bikes and pogo-sticks and never let the boys out of their sight. The atmosphere in the house is calm and serene, and Karen and Jay are equal partners.

In California Michelle Thompson (35) brings new meaning to the phrase "shop til you drop" - she shops in stores or online every day, filling her and her family's closets with up to date labeled fashions in the pursuit of looking great. Husband Carey (37) has spent thousands of dollars on Michelle's plastic surgeries and high-end wardrobe and loves people noticing his "hot" family. The three Thompson kids --Brandon (9), Megan (6) and Noah (4) -- have to be bribed to behave, and even then the bribery doesn't work for long. Brandon is Carey's stepson and their relationship is difficult - Carey can't decide whether to be a parent or a friend, so the two tend to ignore each other.

In Florida, the Vallone family may only have $30 in their bank account, but they are rich in karma, that is. Wife Jana and husband Jason and their four children, Ezekiel (7), Shashamane (5), Malachi (4) and Sheba (2), live in a trailer where all four kids share a bed. Jason is a singer in a reggae band that's waiting for its big break; instead of working a nine-to-five, he devotes his time to the band. Jana cooks, cleans and home- schools the kids according to the principles of ONE LOVE. At the Vallones', Jah will provide, so if the kids want to go to the beach instead of learning spelling, Jana and Jason head to the ocean.

Terri Tassie and her husband, Tom, run their home in Ohio like clockwork. Dad directs his kids' every move with a series of complicated hand signals. Their children, "Team Tassie" -- Collin (11), Trent (14) and daughter Shanie (17) -- are expected to have their feet hit the floor at 7:00 every morning. Chores must be done before school and everyone's bed must be made; if there are any creases on the sheets, Mom makes the kids get out the steamer. All their kids are expected to work at Dad's car dealership in addition to completing their chores. Tom and Teri have no time for silliness or immaturity. They see no shame in being controlling, overprotective parents, and are determined to raise perfectly coiffed, high-performers, just like themselves.
