7 National Research and Development Centre for Welfare and Health Knowledge for welfare and health 6.04/21.10.2002/ ua Ulkomaanavun yksikkö7 Fields of priority Prevention of life-style related non-communicable diseases prevention and treatment of communicable diseases (HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and sexually transmitted diseases) Enhancement and promotion of healthy and socially rewarding lifestyles prevention of drug abuse among young people promotion of young people´s health development of family-centred social and health care services and of administration supporting them strengthening of civil society

8 National Research and Development Centre for Welfare and Health Knowledge for welfare and health International Development Collaboration8 Active collaboration since 1995 34 projects in Leningard Oblast, Republic of Karelia and Murmansk. The work continues: Six new co-operation projects were launched this year by STAKES in the Federation of Karelia, St. Petersburg and the Leningrad area, Russia. Focus is on promoting health and supporting the AIDS centres. Projects are co-financed and there is an active participation by both countries

10 National Research and Development Centre for Welfare and Health Knowledge for welfare and health International Development Collaboration10 Support to the School Health Education in St. Petersburg, 2004 - 2006 Project purpose: Improved health of the schoolchildren in St. Petersburg, due to better awareness concerning health risks and less risky life styles Results: - Information in health promotion issues disseminated - School personnel trained in health promotion - Pilot groups of schoolchildren educated in healthy life styles - Co-ordination between school health promotion programs improved

11 National Research and Development Centre for Welfare and Health Knowledge for welfare and health International Development Collaboration11 Prevention of social exclusion of children and youth at risk in schools in Nevsky District, St. Petersburg, 2005-2007 Project purpose: Improved capacity of specialists and authorities to prevent social exclusion of children at risk Expected results: ‒ Multisectoral, horizontal and vertical collaboration in the administration ‒ Increased competency of school staff to work with risk group children in pilot schools ‒ Early intervention model developed and implemented in pilot schools ‒ Cooperation between Finnish and Russian specialists developed by networking and creating links between schools in both countries ‒ Cooperation between authorities and NGOs enhanced by involving NGOs into the project

12 National Research and Development Centre for Welfare and Health Knowledge for welfare and health International Development Collaboration12 Promotion of health education in child care institutions in St. Petersburg and Leningrad Oblast, 2007-2009 Project purpose: Improved capacity of specialists and personnel of child care institutions to promote healthy life styles and prevent risk behaviour Project principles: - Local ownership of projects, local coordinator - Projects are based on existing resources - Questions of health are discussed in positive sense - Inter-sectoral approach - Individual approach in each pilot organisation

13 National Research and Development Centre for Welfare and Health Knowledge for welfare and health International Development Collaboration13 Learnings and recommendations for the future collaboration between neighbours -Strategic approach: broad view on social and health issues: health in all policies -Institutional development, not just execution of individual projects. Influence in healthy policies, laws and their implementation -Scalability and repeatability of the results -Inter-sectoral collaboration: health & wellbeing, environment, education… -Learn from each other: we are facing similar problems: lifestyle diseases, obesity, alcohol & drugs & tobacco. Let’s try to solve them together! -Improved health and wellbeing of children and teenagers will give the best long-term results to the society
