Title [King Henry VI. Part 2-3]. The vvhole contention betvveene the tvvo famous houses, Lancaster and Yorke... Created / Published Printed at London : For T.P., [1619] Hamnet URL http://shakespeare.folger.edu/cgi-bin/Pwebrecon.cgi?BBID=163925 Provenance Anonymous armorial bookplate (of Goetz Wrisberg?: cf. bookplate in Folger shelf-mark STC 4998; cf. Rosenbach" Provenance Edward Gwynn (d. ca. 1645), bound for. Technical Description The text block was sewn on four raised hemp cords (indeterminate lacing pattern on the boards). The pastedown has a wide guard adhered first with angled edges. The edges of the text block are sprinkled red and the headbands are sewn brown and natural linen thread with a front bead over a hemp core. Dimensions 183 x 139 x 42 mm. Decorative Description Tooled with a triple blind line fillet border, stamped in gilt on the front cover is "EDWARD GWYNN" with an eight petal flower tooled twice on top of each other after the letters between the names. The gold was cut into a narrow strip and did not cover the design, thus leaving some of the tooling of the flower in blind. The spine is tooled into panels with triple line blind lines that do not correspond to the bands. A later much worn label is gold tooled in the second panel. The edges of the board are gold tooled at the top and bottom with an egg and lozenge roll, but the foredge is blind tooled with the same triple line fillet used on the covers. The blind lines on the covers are continued over the board edges at the corners. The binder made the mistake of not cutting the cardboard along the foredge before covering and tooling. He tooled the covers, and gilt the foredge with the egg and lozenge roll, then he realized his mistake and opened up the foredge, cut the cardboard and turned in the leather again bringing the gilt decorative roll inside and under the pastedown and the triple line border that was on the covers now are on the board edge and part of the turn-in.
