3. Morning Break Children are allowed to bring a piece of fruit/ vegetable i.e.a small apple, orange, (peeled), small bunch of grapes, carrot sticks or dried fruit. NB. Not fruit winders, cereal bars, malt loaf or Frubes. We encourage “Water on Desks” where each child must bring a clear plastic bottle with pull up top. Please do not put these in the child’s reading bag! Please ensure that the bottle is named and contains water NOT squash or juice. Lunchtime - Children are able to bring their own packed lunch or have a cooked meal or buffet from the canteen. Please ensure correct money is placed in your child’s named blue purse each day.

4. Shared reading~ Teacher reads a shared text with class modelling fluency and expression. Guided reading~ A group of children reading from the same instructional text supported by the teacher/ helper. Individual reading~ An individual child reading to a teacher/ helper. Reading.

5. The Reading Schemes that we use are Ginn 360, Upstarts, Oxford Reading Tree, New Way. PM readers are used for guided reading, when appropriate. These are all used alongside each other. We use a mixture of ‘phonic’ and ‘look and say’ methods. We use Jolly Phonics to teach letter sounds. (Handouts to be given) Reading

6. Your child will come home with their individual reading book, record book and word tub when we feel that it is appropriate. Please spend 10 minutes quality ‘reading time’ with your child 5x weekly. During reading time, you can discuss the features of the book, such as cover, spine and pages. (See handout). You should also talk about the pictures, in detail, with your child, while relating them to the story. Children will read their home reader each Tuesday and Friday so please ensure that their books are in school on these days. Do not limit yourselves to school reading books alone! Feel free to add your own comments in the record book. The most valuable way you can help your child is through talking and regular reading to and with them.

7. Maths We use the ‘Abacus’ maths scheme but also do a lot of teaching alongside this to implement the topics. The children learn through lots of practical activities. Counting, sorting, matching and the use of mathematical language is happening every day, but is not always recorded. We use number fans to help with number recognition. (Handouts to be given)

8. Home Learning First reading books that come home will have no words Tell the story, using the pictures as prompts and encourage your child to talk about each page/picture in detail. In the tub you will find words for the next set of reading books. Please practice these at home.We will then check them at school and stick them on the tub when they are known. These words are also done as flashcards in the classroom.

9. When we do our phonic learning we will also learn to write the letter, forming it correctly. When helping your child, please remember that we use both sounds and letter names. A handwriting sheet will be sent home for your child to practise showing the correct letter formation. Please practise and encourage correct pencil grip. A number activity will also be sent home. Occasionally the children may have an extra piece of home learning if there is a holiday or its appropriate for project work.

10. Clothes Please ensure that all clothes, shoes and bags are labelled, including coats. Please could you also check periodically that the names are still in tact. P.E. Children have hall sessions during the week and will be expected to wear tee shirts and pants and have bare feet. Please ensure that your daughter brings a tee-shirt if she is wearing a school dress. During the Summer Term, shorts, tee shirts and trainers/daps will be needed. In a P.E. bag ( ALL named please!)

11. Outdoor Learning As part of the new Foundation Phase, much of our learning takes place outdoors. As we now have a new covered area the children will spend part of every day outside. We will provide your children with waterproof clothing, but we ask if you could send in a pair of labelled wellingtons – the more distinctive the better! These are to remain in school. Your child may come home muddy but definitely happy!

12. Absences Please ring and notify school on day. Medicines No medicines administered in school (other than in life threatening conditions)

13. End of day procedures Children will be collected at 3.30pm from classroom firedoors (on Infant yard). Note to class teacher if child is going home on the bus or with someone other than parent/usual carer.
