1
An editorial is a short persuasive essay which usually contains the writer’s opinion or reaction. Purpose: to influence readers to think or act the same way the writer does.
2
Why write an editorial? Inform- usually deal with serious issues (budget cuts) Promote (Dollars For Darfur) Praise- commend good deeds or events (classmate that set up a skate park) Entertain (serious or funny what-to-do-in- our-town idea)
3
Choosing an Issue Make sure it is of real interest to you and most of your audience. Develop a clear statement of what you are trying to prove. –“The student council should represent the entire student body.”
4
Collecting: Gathering Support What factors or evidence will support the case you are making? Can you get the statements from written sources or from authorities that will support your main point? Can you use comparisons to similar situations in support of your argument? Is there a particular image or picture that you can use to strengthen your argument? Can you effectively answer arguments on the other side? (opposing viewpoints)
5
Connecting Present your strong arguments first and last. Point out weakness in opposing viewpoints. Offer solutions or suggestions. Keep a positive tone, don’t get too emotional.
6
Correcting Write about the issues. Let the facts speak for themselves. Keep paragraphs brief and direct. (a few effective examples or illustrations) Don’t write about old news or news that is not important to a number of readers. Make sure it is honest & accurate. Use tasteful humor and wit.
