2 GRAMMAR SNIPPET9/28/15 COMMAS WITH ITEMS IN A SERIES A series consists of 3 or more items of the same kind. – Words – Phrases – Clauses A comma goes between each item in a series, unless all the items are joined by the words and, or, or nor. – Ex: We read, discussed, and debated parts of the story. – Ex: We read and discussed and debated parts of the story. If the items already have commas between them (e.g. a city and a state), then separate the items with a semicolon.

3 GRAMMAR SNIPPET9/28/15 COMMAS WITH ITEMS IN A SERIES Directions: Rewrite the following sentences, inserting commas wherever necessary. Richard Wright wrote short stories articles and an autobiography. Tim Tebow thanked his parents, God and Ms. Trunchbull. I began the report on December 27 1996; revised it on January 4 1997; and turned it in on January 10 1997.

GR 26-30 sheet is due Monday.

6 “AMERICAN HISTORY” POINT OF VIEW ASSIGNMENT Share your rewritten paragraphs with a partner and small group. Help each other to revise to make sure they are written in the correct point of view. Rewrite paragraph 3 in 3 rd person limited point of view. Be sure to change Elena’s “I” to “Elena” or “she” and “me” to “her.” Rewrite paragraphs 15-18 in 1 st person point of view but from Mr. DePalma’s perspective instead of Elena’s. We can infer what Mr. DePalma is thinking about President Kennedy and the lack of caring from his students. Rewrite this as his thoughts. Rewrite paragraphs 31-33 in 3 rd person omniscient point of view. We can infer what Eugene’s mom is thinking about President Kennedy, Elena, and Puerto Ricans in general. How might a 3 rd person narrator who knows what she is thinking rewrite this?

7 POINT OF VIEW (FROM YESTERDAY) It was a cold gray day in Paterson. The kind that warns of early snow. Elena felt miserable because she had forgotten her gloves and her knuckles were turning red and raw from the jump rope. The black girls were also giving her a lot of abuse for not turning the rope hard and fast enough for them. “Listen,” I told the kids. I tried to finish the sentence but couldn’t. How could the President be dead? “Listen,” I repeated, “something awful has happened.” I cleared my throat and spat on the ground. “Gross,” one of the kids said, and they all joined in with laughter. How could they be laughing at a time like this? They’re just too stupid to get it. “The president is dead, you idiots. I should have known that wouldn’t mean anything to a bunch of losers like you kids. Go home!” I shouted. “You live there?” Janet pointed up to El Building, which looked particularly ugly, like a gray prison. She stepped halfway out so that Elena could see the nametag reading “Janet - St. Joseph’s Hospital.” “Yes, I do,” Elena responded. Janet stared at Elena intently for a couple of heartbeats. She wondered how these Puerto Ricans could come to the United States, with all its privileges, and not even care that the president was dead. She decided that her son could not study with a girl like this. After all, what could a little Puerto Rican girl have to offer a smart boy like her son?

8 PLANNING SHEET You will begin planning your short story. You need a completed rough draft in your notebook by Wednesday for workshop groups. It should include the following: Literary Elements: Parallel Plot Point of View Characterization Setting Theme Conflict Craft Tools: Dialogue Imagery Figurative Language
