2. How are you selected? at random, by pool of registered voters a summons will be mailed to you & mailed back within 10 days complete a general questionnaire voir dire – questioning potential jurors

3. What if I don’t show up? The Sheriff’s Department, or U.S. Marshals (fed. court), will contact you $500 fine

4. Exemptions 1. Judge determines you cannot fulfill the responsibilities of a juror 2. Trial date does not work with your schedule & judge decides it would cause you financial hardship 3. Being a student

5. How do they pick? trial jury –6-12 members –decide: guilty, not guilty grand jury –16-23 members –decide: probable cause judge and/or attorneys question potential jurors –85% of cases are won or lost by jury selection

6. How long do I have to serve? usually 2 – 4 weeks BUT it could go as long as the case continues

7. Compensation reimbursed for mileage if chosen, $12/day employer MUST give you a leave of absence
