#1: Singlish English-based creole language Colloquial form of speaking, mixed with words from languages like Malay and dialects like Hokkien / Cantonese While dismissed as being of low prestige by some, most Singaporeans speak Singlish under informal circumstances] Considered a “fast” language, that Singaporeans often tend to chip in words from other languages / dialects to shorten speeches and sentences

#2: Practicality Singaporeans have been known to be extremely practical Career paths often revolve around earning as much money as possible Markers of success are encompassed by the 5Cs: Car Condominium Cash Clubhouse (membership) Credit card An obvious trend, especially in schools, where students are concerned about academics and disregard other areas of life

#3: Fear of losing out “Kiasu”, as the locals call it From young, students compare results with others, afraid of losing out; being the one with a lower score Parents rush their children to tuition, enrichment classes and other “masterclasses” (piano, violin etc), to make their child appear more gifted than others; comparison of exam results between parents Rushing and squeezing onto a crowded bus; using tissue paper or umbrellas to reserve a seat in a crowded eating area

#4: Food Singapore is the home of many signature dishes, like the: Chicken rice Chili crab Bak kut the (pork ribs served in broth of herbs and spices) Open-aired coffee shops / hawker centres

#5: Muliticulturalism Singapore is a multicultural nation, with 4 main races Chinese Malay Tamil Others Quota to hit for percentage of each race living in a HDB block Citizens warmly embrace other cultures, with everyone observing a holiday meant for a specific race / creed All races have an equal say, be it in society or in parliament Laws do not discriminate, and is based on the principal of meritocracy

#6: Bread ice cream Unique to Singapore, this snack is sold by street vendors on the streets of Singapore Instead of vans, ice cream sellers would travel around in motorbikes with a freezer attached by the side A small stall is set up near hotspots like outside shopping malls or schools Rather than scoops of ice cream, ice cream comes in the form of rectangle bars, which are placed between a slice of pandan-flavored bread, making an ice cream sandwich
