Regionalism and Local Color Attempts to accurately represent speech, manners, habits, history, folklore and beliefs of people in specific geographical areas. Local color Truthfully imitates ordinary life and brings a particular region alive by portraying the dialects, dress, mannerisms, customs, characters types, and landscapes of that region.

Tall Tale Form of storytelling featuring outlandish characters and events, often with a comic effect Attempts to fool or impress the listener (or reader) o Hyperbole—extreme exaggeration or overstating a claim or point o Understatement—downplaying the significance of the outlandish o Local Color—brings a region alive by portraying its dress, mannerisms, customs, character types, and speech. Dialect—distinct form of a language spoken in one geographic area or by a particular group. – In “The Notorious Jumping Frog of Calaveras County” Twain uses a frontier dialect.
