2 --------THE BOOK’S TITLE----- This book attemps to provide a quick assessment of Indonesian medical devices’ competitiveness over the last decade. The assessment are based on the economic concepts of revealed competitive advantage (RCA), revealed symmetric comparative advantage(RSCA) and trade balance index (TBI). Each assessment are then presented as a product map. Each map has four commodity classifications, ranging from leading commodities that have both comparative advantage and export-specialization to those having neither comparative advantage nor export-specialization..

The potential of Indonesia as a medical device target market becomes more enormous as early in this year the new Social Security Organizing Body (Badan Pelaksana Jaminan Sosial, BPJS) started to operate. BPJS, which came into being in accordance with the Acts No. 40/2004 on National Social Security System (SJSN) and No. 24/2011 on Social Security Agency (BPJS), will provide public healthcare coverage to tens of millions of low- income Indonesians who could otherwise not afford. BPJS will also provide public healthcare coverage to non-low-income Indonesians who are not currently covered by private insurers. BPJS, in short, will boost the customer base of medical care and medical devices in the country.........................................

5 Medical devices are typically used for one or more of the specific purpose of diagnosis, prevention, monitoring, treatment or alleviation of illness or disease, the specific purpose of diagnosis, monitoring, treatment, alleviation of or compensation for an injury and the specific purpose of investigation, replacement, modification, or support of the anatomy or of a physiological process. Besides, medical devices are used for the purposes of supporting or sustaining life, control of conception, disinfection of medical devices and providing information for medical objectives by means of in vitro examination of specimens derived from the human body (WHO, 2003).
