WIN 23 – Week 23

WIN 23:1 Unreliable narrator: one who does not understand the import of a situation or who makes incorrect assumptions / conclusions about events. Sometimes this narrator is chosen to deliberately fool the reader about the plot or characters. The narrator can reveal his/her limitations at the opening of a piece, or if it’s done to fool the reader, this revelation is saved for the end. Example: Daniel Keyes’ novel Flowers for Algernon has an unreliable narrator who is intellectually compromised.

WIN 23:2 Verisimilitude: from Latin for like the truth, it means the semblance of reality in drama or fiction should be the goal. It was a concept promoted by Aristotle. Verisimilitude in the modern age dictates that characters resemble real people in speech, dress, belongings and situations. Also, the action should be convincing and in accord with the audience’s experience and knowledge.

WIN 23:3 Whangdoodle: a relatively smart, imaginary creature of undefined character that figures in tall tales of the American Southwest. Variations on the whangdoodle are seen in other famous novels for children. See the examples below: The term is used in three of Roald Dahl’s novels. Additionally, Julie Andrews Edwards (Dame Julie Andrews) has a book with that word in the title: The Last of the Really Great Whangdoodles.

WIN 23:4 Whodunit or whodunnit: these are detective or mystery stories driven by plot. Readers are often given clues by an eccentric amateur detective that is investigating the crime. The solution is often figured out before the end of the story by using deduction.
