9. Allusion A brief, usually indirect reference to a person, place, or event--real or fictional.

10. ANTAGONIST A character in a story or poem who deceives, frustrates, or works against the main character.

11. PROTAGONIST Considered to be the main character or lead figure in a novel, play, story, or poem

12. flashback A literary or cinematic device in which an earlier event is inserted into the normal chronological order of a narrative.

13. FORESHADOWING To indicate that something is going to happen either good or bad later

14. hyperbole A figure of speech that uses exaggeration Example – “This book weighs a ton”

15. Irony The use of words to convey the opposite of their literal meaning;literal

17. symbol A word or object that stands for another word or object

18. aside An actor’s speech directed to the audience, that is not supposed to be heard by other actors on stage.
