3 What is a simile? A comparison using “like” or “as”. She’s as pretty as a picture. Her eyes sparkle like diamonds.

4 Metaphor

5 What is a metaphor? A comparison made without using “like” or “as”. You are an angel. Her eyes were sapphires shining in the night.

6 Personification

7 What is personification? Non-human objects are given human qualities. Ten thousand daffodils saw I at a glance, tossing their heads in sprightly dance.

8 Hyperbole Exaggeration used for effect. “tons of money” “a million thanks”

9 Alliteration

10 What is alliteration? Two or more words close together that begin with the same consonant sound—tongue-twisters! Sally sells seashells by the seashore. The wild wind whistled and wailed.

11 Betty Botter had some butter, "But," she said, "this butter's bitter. If I bake this bitter butter, It would make my batter bitter. But a bit of better butter, That would make my batter better. 17 What is an idiom A saying that has two meanings- a literal (word-for-word) and a non-literal (implied) meaning. It’s raining cats and dogs I’m in a pickle It came straight from the horse’s mouth

19 What is repetition? A word or entire phrase used more than once for emphasis. After seventy days of wind and sun, of wind and clouds, of wind and sand, after seventy days of wind and dust, a little rain came. From Out of the Dust

21 What is imagery? A visual image that the writer creates with words. I was coming home through a howling dust storm; my lowered face was scrubbed raw by dirt and wind. Grit scratched my eyes; it crunched between my teeth.

23 What is symbolism? Something that stands for something else. red = passion, anger white = purity cross = religion heart = love black cat = evil

25 What is connotation? Positive or negative associations society attaches to words that have nothing to do with the dictionary definition.

28 What is denotation? The exact dictionary definition of a word.
